Can we please discuss the use of reverb on drums.

I typically apply a medium size room sound to all of the kit with a low mix level, minus the kick drum.

I'll occassionally apply a different setting to the snare to get a little bit longer decay than the rest of the kit.

What about eqing the verbs. To be honest this is something I have never done. What would the chain look like. I know a lot of people mentioning equing out all the low stuff in the verb.

Usually I cut the low and high frequencies of the reverbs and delays. I find them more natural that way.

I recently recorded an album for my band and put the drums in a total empty room made of concrete. I got so much brutal reverb in there so I never had to put any reverb on it in the mix. I put up a song here if you would like to listen.

It's really suitable for a "doomy" sound, but I wouldn't recommend it for faster metal.

Cheers

Awesome song! And it sounds very very good. I really like the snare. :)

Yeah, I wonder about this too. When you talk about scooping the reverb, are you just strapping an EQ across the return? And if so, how much are you dipping out? Broad or narrow Q?
I think it's a good idea to roll off some of the bottom as well, but I really have no idea what to do up top. I mean, if you listen to the "Taking Back My Soul" intro, I hear plenty of high end on that verb. I think when using samples/close mics (as opposed to a lot of snare in overheads, room mics, etc.), you have to depend partly on the reverb to give the drums that sense of air. But then again, the high end on a lot of reverbs I've heard sounds like crap. This is something I've really been struggling with lately, and I feel like I suck at it. Or maybe my reverbs suck. Or both, heh heh.
I would love some input and tips from Andy about this subject.

Great topic!
What i use now is voxengo pristine space impulse reverbs, sonitus FX reverbs, and the waves reverb offcourse, but i still cant get into "that kind of sound" like we hear on modern day records..

I tried it today, thanks for mentioning, pretty good with the impulses on the Voxengo sites:)
Anyone have some cool impulses to share?:saint:

I usually cut everything under 200 Hz and above 8000 or 10000Hz just to cut the highest frequencies. I think it's a matter of taste too.. Sometimes you don't want to cut the highest either.
