I'm not sure I'm a metal fan for the same reasons most people are.

I love my music fast and somewhat aggressive, with epic themes beyond the normal pop drivel, but with certain pop sensibilities--a vocal focus, an ear-worm chorus. And I've noticed recently that I occasionally hear a song like that that I really like that doesn't fall into my typical power-prog-melothrash routine.

Like this:

Or even this:

It's not metal, but there's still speedy drums and a high-powered chorus. I'm looking for some more stuff like that, outside of metal, and I figure alt-rock or grunge is the best place. But I can find it elsewhere, even in straight-out pop-rock:

Any song/band recommendations along these lines?

Seems I've heard dozens of songs like that Yellowcard song on the radio and the Nirvana song was the beginning(in popular FM music) of that noisy wide open chord slamming on a heavy distorted guitar. A technique (or lack there of) I do not like, palm mutes with a little varying chop please

The Benatar song is A typical early/mid 80's popular FM radio music. Saint Elmos Fire kind of stuff, with that keyboard sound and epic feel vocal chorus backing "meaningful" verses. Not my favorite song of hers but it does take me back to those times.

There are probably XM and even FM stations that will give you this kind of music all day long. One is the mid 80's pop rock sound and the other 90's + popular hardedged sound.

I would say just explore Grunge and/or Punk ala Rancid, Offspring, Greenday etc... but consider the Ramones/previous punk bands before the 90's....

I'm not a guitarist myself, or a guitar aficionado (I play trumpet, a metal instrument, but not a "metal" instrument); I notice vocals and vocal lines a good deal than guitars. I just like 'em speedy. Like I said, I'm a terrible metalhead! :D

Radio... unfortunately, most of what I hear on the radio is either idiot rappers or whiny lifeless pop-starlet Music-In-A-Can. Alt-rock stations do a bit better, but they play the same songs a LOT, and only occasionally hit on one with some oomph in it.

I have liked some Offspring and Green Day I heard a long, long time ago. May look into that.

I should have lived in the '80s, I think!

I started out on trumpet along time ago, droped it as soon I found hardrock and the guitar.

So imagine two trumpet players standing in the studio and blasting out solid whole notes for every 4 beat measure and only useing 3 or 4 scale tones for the entire song. Not very inspiring.

As a trumpet player I suggest you purchase Chicago Transit Authority and Chicago II, some Blood Sweat and Tears, download a copy of Ides of March song "Vehicle", Uriah Heeps song "Salsibury". These bands and songs did a good job using horn sections and I believe early Chicago and BS&T have many stand out songs due to the horns. "Vehicle" and "Salisbury" are just awesome. Theres others of course less known to me and probably some in more recent decades.

Back to the sounds you are talking about, you cant be on the right radio stations. I've heard alot of music like that but it just passes by and I dont pay attention to the band names.
