Censorship in muisc

OK, I'm going to repsond to both Union 9 and Mazinger in the same post. Hope you don't mind?

Union9 - I think what you're saying is right to a certain extent. Children should certainly be protected from some of the realities that are tackled in the various mediums at work i.e. music, film, television etc. However my feelings regarding censorship are that there should be no adult censorship at all. Partly because of the point you highlighted about someone tackling an issue like nazism/racism/peadophillia but not from a pro-issue perspective. But also partly because if, say, a band wanted to release an album called 'Rape my pals Children' that is their prerogative. However they MUST accept responsibility for the reaction to that kind of action. No one in their right mind would do that unless they had a severe death wish. This is obviously something that children need to be protected from - YES!

Mazinger - Both of your examples are good ones that highlight all the different aspects of this debate. It is by no way clear cut and obviously not everyone is going to agree. I think maybe you're right in as much as there is definitely a huge amount of superficial and subjective discrimination going on here but we feel that it is more than that. Scalplock's album has neither racist/sexist or any other kind of 'ist' content. It is not offensive (unless you don't share the view but we're never going to be in a situation where everyone does)/libellous/blasphemous. The album simply tackles issues surrounding world politics and in particular America and it's foregin policy! Like I have said before the views in the album merely represent one particular view that neither we or the band are saying is right. It is just an opinion. And again, a highly intelligent, informed and by no means exclusive opinion. There are many many many people who agree with everything Scalplock are saying, particularly newspapers and magazines. The fact that the album tackles very current issues may be a factor into the refusal to work on it but that IS NOT good enough. Scalplock have just as much right as anyone else to air their views and opinions and music is their weapon of choice to do so. Any thoughts?

In answer to your question this is happeing right here in the UK! The main companies involved are Distcronics (huge corporate pressing house - UK's largest - is this a factor??????) and Impress (UK's largets pressing broker). There are lots of wuestions that come up such as:

If we were a major label would they have pressedit?
If we were pressing more than 3000, say 50000, would they have pressed it? etc etc.

It's fucking great! Brutal and fast blast-beat combined with a whole load of stuff. Early Scalplock was firmly rooted in the hardcore and punk scene and there are distinct elements of these genres in there too. Generally it is very aggressive grindcore.

It's a bullshit situation that Scalplock are in.Obviously everyone is a bit touchy since Sep 11 and anything that touches that will be seriously questioned. It should be released.I see no problem.
