Centurions Ghost Centurions Ghost
Self released Demo June 2003
By Russell Garwood
English doom collective Centurions Ghost recently recorded their debut, self/untitled demo, which comprises three classic doom-inspired songs. The vocals of James (Pyforia) for some reason remind me of early Venom, the half-spoken, half-growled sing-song tone contrasting with an otherwise forlorn backing. Sporadic slower and more guttural vox are better fitting, under which the guitars of Andy (Carrion, Tyga Claw) and Dan (138) plod mercilessly along before breaking back into faster yet relentless riffage. The melodic lead work keeps everything interesting, while simplistic drums (Milly - ex-Flood, End Of Level Boss) and bass (Rich Searing Orchard) fit well, making for a solid rhythm section.
Numerous start/stop sections and guitar solos add further variation, and occasional atmospheric passages ring of funeral doom. Centurions Ghost are an interesting - if not wholly original - band, which fans of both classic and newer doom are likely to enjoy.
