Misanthrope... has anyone heard this band?

They are pretty cool... death metal/thrash with jazz breaks and a cool bassist.

hmmm... crazy. It takes a while to understand.

in fact, i'm not really sure that i exactly understand...?

Sounds like something along the lines of Sculptured, or maybe the older Don Caballero albums. This is a style I quite like, so I'll be sure to check them out.

Misanthrope is really a great band. They have a very strange style, but it's always high quality metal. The last three albums are really great : Libertine Humiliations , Visionnaire , Misanthrope Immortel. They are quite well known here in France and they did a tour this year with gloomy grim and yearning.

These days a side project of the main compositor "SAS de l'argilière" and the bassist of Misanthrope released their debut cd : Argile - "The monotonous Moment of A Monologue". I did not hear it yet, but it seems to be more doom than misanthrope. (celtic frost influences, +a french translated version of a Darkthrone song).

I think you could check out some other french bands, like for example Heavenly (speed metal) or Anorexia Nervosa (symphonic black metal), they are really good bands there.
