Change your mind on anyone yet??

I have had releases by Voyager, Red Circuit, and While Heaven Wept for most of the summer, having purchased them on a spree a while back. I have only given them one or two listens since the acquisition prior to the fest. I knew that WHW had this 15 minute epic I played several times, but the new roster forced me to spin the rest of the tracks and to my amazement they are also very rad. WHW is the band to see next year. They will be this year's Seventh Wonder for me.

Damn it!! I'm so pissed right now!!! :-(

I just spent considerable time typing up a response because, in short, yes I have heard most of these bands now and I'm blown away by the line up! Quality bands!!! However, I can't believe I even did this, but I mistakenly click on a link on the page which took me away from it and I lost EVERYTYHING!!! I can't even bring myself to start over at this moment, I will have to come back and try again to write up a little blurb about each band again another time.

I think there is something for everyone and with much crossover. I actually think I will be entertained the entire time! Even the bands that are the weakest to me, I think will be great to watch.

Fuck it people! Just get off your asses and come! Where else can you come every year and see so many friends and make new ones? Where else do you get such an intimate experience with most of the bands? Especially bands of this caliber? Seriously?!?! People were just treated to 21 bands over 4 days - 13 at the main festival and people had a GREAT time! And listening through this lineup, there is no way someone can tell me that if they actually sat in the room and listened to these bands that they aren't going to enjoy a good bit of them. Of course you haven't heard of these bands or not as much! That is the very nature of this scene and is what brought us together in the first place!!

Sorry, I'm only 41 but I heard Sancuary from the beginning and have them on vinyl and CD. I used to cover a song from them and it kicked ass! They kick ass and were part of the early days and influence to progressive and power metal. I saw them with Fates Warning at Hammerjacks. They begat Nevermore. So yeah, they belong there and yeah, as headliner. People with enjoy their show if they get in that room. Or they will bitch outside instead. Like others, I hope Warrel hits the notes. I'm sure he'll make a valiant effort. If not, well it still will be fun. As far as the newer bands that no one has heard of? GREAT!!! Personally, as a guitarist in Odin's Court, I think its great that there is a festival that will actually give an unknown band a chance and perhaps help to break them. One can hope, can't he? ;-) The thing here is that this fresher blood is some damn good shit! These are people who have worked hard to hone their craft to the point that can handle the ProgPower stage and give a good performance. Whether we like the style or not, these bands are good and appeal to someone - just without the brand name. But again, isn't that what this scene and very festival has been about?!?!

Heard of any of these?
Symphony X
Evergrey
Pain of Salvation
Edguy
Blind Guardian
Brainstorm
Circle II Circle
Pagan's Mind
Circus Maximus
Rainstorm
Freak Kitchen
Riverside

Yes, these bands existed, but really got a nice push from playing PP. Evergrey was new for me. Circus Maximus? Remember when they were unknown? Michael Erickson is a household name on this forum now. People went nuts over Rainstorm (not me but I understand the appeal). They were basically unknown. Remember when it used to be cool that no one else heard of these bands? What changed? Tell me, what changed? Don't like new music anymore? Stuck with the same 5-10 groups? Dream Theater has been my favorite band for close to 20 years, but I like to listen to more than DT. There is room for more. Used to be if it was good, we liked it. Now it has to be popular?

I GUARANTEE you - When Heaven Wept will take the stage and destroy the place. People will talk about their performance and their music for years to come. Had I heard of this (local to me) band a week ago? No! Judging a band by it's name - did I think I would like this band's music? Honestly? No. However, because I gave it a chance and actually listened I found that I love this disk! Judging by other's reactions already, I can tell that I'm not alone in being pleasantly surprised and really digging it!

I just can't imagine anyone coming to this festival not having a phenomenal time. Great music and great people! Open your minds and let some new talent take the stage. Let some older bands that people have been dying to see for the first time take the stage. Let some bands that just haven't really made it much around the states take the stage. You will be entertained - PERIOD. You will get your money's worth - NO DOUBT! You will have the time of your life - NO QUESTION!

Whew! I didn't realize I had that much built up. I guess I've just enough negativity over the past few days and had enough. But I just knew I wouldn't be disappointed. And now that I've actually listened, there is no doubt that we are in for a treat. And if there is a band that you really don't like and you've seriously given them a chance. GREAT! At least you have a time you can go eat. Just back so you can see the next band! :-)

That's why I now start typing long posts offline and then copy and paste. It's happenend to me before.

Actually knew of all the bands though quite a few strictly by name.
WHW being one of them....very impresssed ...and, get the chance to see them on the 25th.
Arcturus......um....WTF is the applicable response at this time.....after a quick myspace check, not so sure about this one from a musical standpoint.
2 or 3 more to explore.

Have heard all the bands before announced. Either by owning the music or samples. I am only seriously interested in 3 bands. Eldritch, Labyrinth, and Red Circuit. Mildly interested in Haken but I would get to see them anyway if I attended that night to see Labyrinth and Red Circuit. I'm sure I would leave after Labyrinth. I would miss Eldritch because the rest of that night holds absolutely no interest for me and Eldritch has been on a downhill slide since PotAW anyway. It is what it is.

In the past I listened to Mob Rules and brushed it off fairly quickly. But now, I'm kind of getting into them. I enjoy that the songs are often allowed to develop, and the songs have some texture to them. Not just straightforward power metal. Dream Evil I'm still iffy on. I like their slower material, but their faster ends up too generic and simple for my tastes.

Glenn, I was going to pick some at the insider sale but didn't know which ones to grab from each band. Besides Sanctuary and Mob Rules, can't you give your recommendations for each band? Thanks.

I was going to post a new thread that basically said the same things Rick.I want to issue a "call to arms" so to speak to everyone out there. How can we expect Glenn to carry on with the festival if we don't give new bands chances to win us over? The older bands will eventually be gone and we will be left with nothing but regrets for allowing the festival to end just because we were too caught up in our own selves to listen to something that might be a little different at times.God knows I'm so thankful I decided to stay for Delain.I've been listening to them ever since that night. If there's one thing I've noticed about Glenn,it's that he KNOWS there will be bitching but in the end THERE WILL BE BANDS that not only surprise us but blow us away at every festival!!!!

can't you give your recommendations for each band? Thanks.

Dream Evil- The Book of Heavy Metal

Curious why you choose that one.I had an overload of the metal worship songs. I think their earlier material was stronger, in terms of diversity, and song writing, though almost every album has lots of metal worship songs. I haven't listened to their latest stuff to compare though.

Not me. I thought the lineup was brilliant to begin with! I still need to give Creation's End and Red Circuit a try though.

Red Circuit is the shit!

I had heard of Dream Evil before but had not paid them much attention, and after some youtube research find that I like them a lot!

Voyager...completely off the radar until last week--good stuff!

I thought Mob Rules looked interesting, but listened more to them and lost interest...cannot all be winners I guess.

I am really liking While Heaven Wept and Creations End so far! I don't care much for Arcturus or Sanctuary though. The rest all sound pretty good. I have to admit that I do feel much better about the lineup than I did Friday night when I was going WTF!

Now lets see if Shane can get Seventh Wonder back for the Showcase!

When you are introducing a person to a band, you want to go with the most melodic and anthem/hook type songs available in order to catch their interest up front and then let them explore the rest. The title track from that album delivers that in spades more than any other song they have ever released.

You have to remember that the knowlegable power metal fan is not the person I am aiming at.

I still need to check out WHW, but Hakem was a lil weird for me. Creations End is the shit though they kinda remind of Red Circuit who is playing the folllowing night so that seeems a lil strange. I love the lineup though its fucking great, but most importantly is........

DREAM

F%@&NG

EVIL!!!!!!!!!!!!

I cant believe I finally get to see them in my favorite atmosphere, the only thing that will make this better is if I am their sponsor (they were on my list)!!!!

The only bands that were new to me were Creation's End, Haken, and Red Circuit. I haven't checked out Haken or RC yet - but Creation's End is pretty good. I'm still in shock about Arcturus and Sanctuary playing. When the video was playing and the logo came out for Arcturus, I thought I was reading it wrong because I was under the assumption they had split up and would never play together again. Then if I wasn't spinnging enough, Future Tense started playing and I about passed out. (OK, not really, but pretty close). *THEN* WHW got announced I absolutely flipped out! I love this band and was hoping more people would get to hear them. I'm particularly pleased in all the positive response this band is getting. Can't wait for next year, I haven't been this excited for a lineup since 3.

For the bands, all but Therion are new to me (nooooo comment, please), so I have a LOT of listening to do in the next year!! However, I love the singer's voice for Creation's End (thought he was fabulous on the Masterplan disc sang on) and, after one spin, I think I'm really going to like Red Circuit. Husband thinks I ought to like Voyager, too, so we'll see!!

  • Therion -
  • Sanctuary - HELL (insert random profanity here) YES!!:kickass:
  • Arcturus - Been trying to listen to stuff on their Myspace, hasn't grabbed me yet.
  • Dream Evil - Own every album, they should crush live.
  • Labyrinth - I know I have/had an album around here somewhere, sounded very Helloween-ish to me at the time, I'll be checking out more of them. Their Myspace only had 1 track on it, but I liked it.
  • Mob Rules - I have 2-3 albums by these guys, I personally think every release gets better and better as they go on.
  • Eldritch - I like what I've heard on their Myspace. To me they sound like another band that mixes a little of prog and power into their music. I think everyone may find something they like here.
  • While Heaven Wept - My guess is this will be the "Brainstorm / Tad Morose / Circle II Circle" band of the weekend. Very cool sound.
  • Red Circuit - I liked what I heard, very easy and appealing to the ears.
  • Voyager - not doing anything for me yet. Progsnobs beware: I'm a Refuge Denied fanboy... move along.. move along.
  • Haken - I start to like it then it loses me.. repeat. Still on the fence with these guys.
  • Creation's End - The teaser thing they posted was pretty impressive. I'm very much looking forward to buying this album.
Albums that may help other people enjoy these bands like I did:

Dream Evil "Dragonslayer" is the first album I got from them and remains my favorite to this day. If they play "In Flames You Burn" and "the 7th Day" live I'll clone myself on the spot - awesome power metal album.

Sanctuary "Refuge Denied" stands alone IMO. For fans of ear bleeding vocals with technical Megadeth type guitar playing. "Into the Mirror Black" is a more tamed yet progressive release. I love both, but I love me some "Halford" moments more.

Mob Rules "Hollowed Be thy Name" is my favorite of the ones I own, I still need to pick up Radical Peace like everyone else says. The title track on Hollowed is my favorite tune by them so far.

Therion "Deggial" is what got me into them and the teaser song they posted has me really wanting more. I have every album from Vovin on. The earlier death material is OK, but nothing grabbed me to warrant a purchase.
