Cheap Behringer pre vs GAP 73 (clips inside)

The GAP sounds slightly larger to my ears, open mids & the notes don't sound as
squashed. The GAP takes nicer to post eq'ing.
The beh has more uncontrolled low end.

Still at that, i was expecting alot more from the GAP :erk:

Whichever one was the first part was best imo. I found the detail of the high mids during the chugs much better on that. Also sounds bigger.

Secretly hoping that one was the behringer now :D

I think the order is the other way around now than the original file, right? The first one being the one I liked less.
Really curious now

nope same way round, i changed the amp settings slightly different on clip 2, i took away the low end on the amp, i figured
seeing as the behringer was struggling with flabby low end that id adjust it on the amp and see how it reacted to the change.

1st guitar is GAP on both clips, the behringer is the 802 model btw.

unbelievable huh.

The gap me soon be on a possible return to Thomann lol

Ill post 1 more clip this time with some post eq on both guitars.

Cool, I should check this test again on my decent speakers later, cause so far I've been listening from my livingroom. On the individual tracks, I did notice quite a big difference even form here though, and as it seems the one I prefered was the GAP. I can imagine that increased detail becoming noticable when stacking 20 tracks recorded with the gap. But I also think that for that money there may be some other things that would make more improvement for you right now :) More microphones, treatment, saving up for better monitors, etc, would all be things I would consider before upgrading my preamps.

here are both pre's eq'd, same order as before.

I can really tell the difference in this example, 1 of the 1st thing's i noticed in previous tests, the GAP takes alot nicer to
eq.

not much eq going on here, a dip around 200hz and an increase around 3000hz to bring out some bite.

the beh sounds kinda lifeless to the gap after post eq, not sure to the reasons why but the gap takes kinder to eq.

Ill probably keep the gap due to this as i tend to generally eq my guitars in a mix around the same areas as above.

actually on a 2nd listen, the quad track examples give off a similar vibe. The gap just sounds livelier.
lol i think sometimes you need to take 5 mins away from your cans and come back to it to notice a difference,
but yeah, definitely hearing big differences in all 3 clips now.

I think 2 is the GAP (assuming the GAP sounds better/smoother less grainy and a bit boomier which is what I would expect from a neve pre). I'm not the most anal AE around here but I would call the difference substantial (listening on my DSM-3).

1 gap
2 behringer

im going to upload better clips tomorrow

1. double tracked
2. quad tracked
3. with post eq

i used my iso cab today and the tones r fuckin terrible to say the least.
ill take a bit of time and post clips tomorrow that actually sounds decent,
this will probably reveal alot more between the 2.
