I have a Crate GFX-212 solid state combo amp that's been in storage for a few years. I've also been using PODFarm for all my guitar tones during tracking. Now as we all know, real amps mic'd up sound better than software.
So my question is this (asking to save me some time and effort):
Would micing up (sm57) the combo amp give me a more than likely better tone than using PODFarm?

Shit no.

You can try other ampsims than PODFarm if you want a different tone though. Overloud TH1 ($), Revalver ($), Le456, 8505, 7170 (+ impulses)... the list goes on. You could potentially even get a better tone with one these, in my experience.

I agree but something you may want to experiment with is pumping the PodFarm signal without a cab through the power section of the crate and micing the speaker. Then blend that sound with the normal PodFarm tone, may add some "air" and speaker movement to an otherwise dull tone.
