Unthroned - Tortured Existance

I present to thee our latest demo song. See what you think :)

Its home-recorded on my computer, going through a shitty sound card. Guitars and bass are all recorded through a Digitech 2101 effects processor and then straight into the computer (no mic or amp). Drums are still programmed because we cant record drums yet. Around 2 or 3 days was spent mixing though, and we are all very proud of the end result, i hope you enjoy it too! :)

All feedback is appreciated, any criticism welcomed. The other 5 members will be browsing this thread so make sure to give them some feedback as well if you would be so kind. The songwriting credits go to "enigma_nocurnus", though we all wrote our own parts from the original song ideas.

enjoy, and thanks in advance :)

I agree. This one doesn't stand out as much as the other one (An Empire Torn?). The vocals also muddy up the sound a bit as they sound almost like another distorted guitar. I like some of the ideas in the song, but overall, it doesn't seem to click like the other songs. Maybe it'll take more listens to fully absorb.

Hey everyone.
Thanx to those who have taken the time to download the song.
I'll be looking foward to more people getting a hold of it.

This song is another one of our more simplistic songs, like "An Empire Torn".
It quickly became a band favourite which is why we posted it. Also because we feel it has such a strong groove element to it we thought it might be a cool song to let people hear.
As Dave said, it was mixed in about 3 days roughly. But that was 3 days including another song that got mixed aswell out of the 4 demo's we have recorded over the last month or so. So it was really about a day and a halfs worth of mixing roughly for this song.
I can tell you all that our other songs are different again, and go into a little more depth in exploring a few other area's of metal that we all get into.
The newer songs tend to change pace and feel a lot. Where as a song like this one(Tortured Existence) and "An Empire Torn" tend to built and constructed around one very solid feel and mood.

I guess collectively as the band we feel that the other songs change around so much within themselves that we wanted at least 2 songs on the album that kind of found a really solid feel and groove, and base the whole song around that.
I guess so that at least 2 songs on the album could work kind of like anchor points that pull all the other, more diversified songs together.

I can say that the version of "An Empire Torn" that you may have downloaded when it was up earlier last year has changed. We feel for the better.
It's just a couple of sections that got repeated in the original were dropped and 2 new sections were added in their place. And we feel that these new sections were enough to colour the song a little more and bring it more in line with the standard of all our other songs, while at the same time keeping the more simplistic approach, just as we did for "Tortured Existence" aswell.

We will post the new version of "An Empire Torn" as soon as it is mixed to the quality of this song, just so that everyone who took the time to download the original can hear it in it's newer state, and fatter production.

Then that will probably be the last thing we post untill such time as the album is recorded, and or the mp3 site is up and running(which will be happening sometime over the course of the next few months).

Anyway, thanx again to anyone who has downloaded this song, and I...... and the other members look foward to anymore forthcomming comments.

Thanx, Trent.

:p

@alffnot1: Drums programmed using Cubase with the LM-9 plugin, with the drum samples replaced with samples stolen from our drummers trigger unit. Mixing would've also helped the drums get their final sound.

@Aborted Fetus: That interests me, because in my opinion this song works the best of all our songs. It feels right to me, maybe with time it will grow on you once you learn its ins and outs. Keen to know if others agree with you though.

@Trent: To add to that I'd say between this song and An Empire Torn people should have a fair idea of what we sound like, so long as they realise the other songs have their slightly different overall sounds/genres as well.

OMG the energy, the power, THE RAW PASSION!!

I'm gonna have this song stuck in my head for weeks!!!

I'll be honest, I certainly prefer An Empire Torn, or at least the old version of it. I think the riffs on this one aren't as catchy or as memorable... but it's not just that, as far as I'm concerned it seems like something is missing, whereas on AET it wasn't. I'm also not too keen on the vocals, but if someone throws some lyrics at me (hint ;)) I could probably get used to them. But whereas AET would make me stop whatever I was doing and listen (and it does), this wouldn't, and doesn't.

But this sounds too negative, and it wasn't quite meant to come out like that because I do like this song, and with more listens I'll probably like it more. :)

I thought the song was pretty damn good but having just listened to Empire Torn, it loses, Empire Torn is a totally amazing song i just drifted away when i was listening to it. Having said that the guitar work on this one is really cool and keyboards work very well.

Also the other song "Empire Torn" reminds of the lyrics in one of Emperors songs dont remember the name though but he sings " an empire torn apart" Do you have any influences by Emperor at all?

Well, after a few more listens, I have discovered more of the song and have gotten more used to it. But I'll stick to my statement that I think An Empire Torn (at least the version I've heard) is, IMO, a better song.

To me, the riffs in that song are more my style. Of all your songs (both solo and Unthroned material), An Empire Torn and Disposable are the ones that caught my attention the most, with the latter being my favorite. I guess the overal structures and feelings evoked by each song are of the style that appeals to me more than that of the other material. While it would be great to hear more stuff along those lines, there's absolutely no reason to have all your songs sound the same, as it would dilute the effect. But I'm sure you already know that. :)

Also, when do we get to hear the other demo songs?

I'm going to have to wait till I get home which isn't going to be very nice because I don't get home for the next 5 hours.
Should be good though. I'll have to take up the offer to see you guys practice as soon as possible and experience it

hehehehehe, I guess maybe Emperor influence me slightly.

The song with the lyric you speak of comes from an amazing song called "The Erruption" from my fave album of all time.... "Prometheus the Discipline Of Fire and Demise".

I originally wanted to call the song "The Empire Torn", the other guys said they like the way "An Empire Torn" sounded off the tongue.
I didn't mention that alternative, it was them..... and this was at a stage where I was basically the only one who knew Prometheus.

But still, even with my original title... "The Empire Torn", it was a title that could easily be worked into the lyrical concepts that we deal with, while at the same time allow me to pay homage and say goodbye to my favourite band.

Now, a couple of notes.
In regards to the comments about the vocals I thought it only fair I explain a bit more about how they were done, and what our aims were with them.

Unthroned has experienced a lot of turmoil getting to this point over the course of the last 3 and a half years or more.
I have only just completed my line up not quite a year ago. And many of the original songs got scrapped and we started from scratch as this new band, with the new line up, with a new team of creative writers. Not just me and me alone! Which is what I wanted.
Now because there was so much change going on, it made it virtually impossible for Luke(our singer) to keep coming to rehearsals and keep up with all the change going on around him.
So he basically had about a 2 year stint where he didn't sing at all, and we worked our asses off trying to complete material for us to be able to bring him back and get him singing again.

Now, these demo's have only been recorded for the sole purpose of having a good document for another recent member of the band to learn the material by. And also so we can play around and experiment so we know exactly what we want to do come album time.
They have all been done very quickly, the guitars sound flabby cause it's all still direct recorded onto a $40 soundcard, even though there was some better gear being used this time round in terms of distortion and effects e.t.c.

Now, Luke has only basically been back in the rehearsal room with us each sunday for about the last 3 months or so. Definately no longer than that.
All his lyrics are in very rough first draught stages, and very much incomplete.

What you hear on this demo recording is Luke laying down vocals after drinking about 3/4 of a bottle of home distilled scotch(that was my fault) and just having fun with the songs experimenting around getting ideas, and finding his voice again.
Only a small portion of what you hear on the song is actual lyrical content. The rest of it is basically all random phrasing having fun and giving us an idea of what we want vocal wise on the end result.
Two vocal tracks were recorded, one more low, one more high which is where you would hear a little bit of that crazy demonic sounding vocal style. It's the 2 tracks colliding with one another.
We wanted to document both vocal styles so we could see which we prefer for which bit of the song, and also if we might like a low and high at the same time in some bits of the song.

But basically, as with all our demo's. It was just for the purposes of documentation, learning, and experimentation.

So I guess what I'm saying is, on the album the vocals could be completely different again. We just don't have a firm plan yet. It's still to early.

Also keep in mind that it wasn't just us that Luke had not done singing with for 2 years. It was no siging at all for that period. So it's only just all started up again for him recently.

Thank you again to everyone who has taken the time to download the song.

It's interesting for both me and Dave and probably everyone else in the band that everyone seems to prefer "An Empire Torn", as we all feel Tortured is a bit stronger.
But at the same time, when I think about the whole idea of "An Empire Torn" being the catchy pop song on the album then I guess it's a matter of the original plan to make it a bit infectious, or memorable is working.

I also think though, that maybe when the album comes out if any of you decide to buy the album a song like "An Empire Torn" might be the first to become an early favourite, but will probably also be the first to loose it's novelty and lasting power as some on this forum might refer to it. Which is definately the way it is designed. That song and "Tortured Existence" are more kind of appetisers for the other songs. Designed to hopefully get people into them, but then hopefully make them more hungry for the other songs and what they have to offer.

But in my eyes, if someone likes just one Unthroned song it's a happy day for me. I love all our songs, so if somebody else likes just one I can't really ask more than that.

Anyway, I hope I have helped make a few more things clearer about the bands aims, and the aims of these demo's.

Thanx again, Trent.

Prometheus is your fav ortie album of all time?! ME TOO! LETS BE LOVERS!!...

ACtually.. when you guys get big, and start touring, I'll be your getting coffee guy.

As for the song, I'm blown away as ussual, and the vocals are great.. I heard some clean vocal harmonics. PUT MORE IN.. Whatever those few seconds were, we need MORE!!

Also, my mum heard it, and called me a satan worshipper.

Comparing this song to an empire torn, An empire torn seems a lot more melodic and the solos are kinda precision placed etc. But songs are a completely different style, and it shows your diverse talent.

Tortured seems a lot heavier, and more involved. A very pumping song. I find the introduction build up is excellent. The vocals are actually pretty good, they change styles frequently, and Luke is obviously doing a good job after 2 years of no singing. The orchestration, and the keyboard backing is excellent. They are used sparingly. The guitar production still sounds pretty damn good for a $40 soundcard. I love the quick breaks into blast beats, and back into a slow rythm. Hell, parts of it remind me of cradle of filth. The riffing structure is pretty good, nice and melodic without sounding like a NWOSDM rip off. Again, the drums, although programmed, are excellent.. I can't wait to hear some live drumming! But really, I can not complain about the production at all. This material although a demo, is better quality than a lot of released and professionally mixed metal albums. I can't wait to hear more stuff from both Unthroned and David Caswell's solo stuff.

From your Self Proclaimed Number 1 Fan!! heheh...
