Dumbass me didnt look at the back of the cab
...
just plugged in..turned on etc..the clean is nice and loud but the crunch and the ultra are't at all and the gain control seems to do nothing...
Any ideas???

Could be a few things...
The XXX has an active FX Loop, I believe, so the FX Send/Recieve volume will mess with the channel volume(s). Look on the back of the head and turn the FX Send and Recieve knobs all the way up. If that doesn't fix it, then I dunno.

You might have a bad pre tube in V1. I've had them go out in V1 with this symptom. If the effect loop cables are reversed it will have this symptom too.
cheers guys..i emailed peavey anyway..hopefully its not too much hassle to get fixed..a XXX whcih just a clean channel aint that much fun.haha

Yeah, I'm not sure about the xxx. "Everybody's X", who is on this forum, has a XXX. Just find out where V1 is and swap with a new one. On a 5150, V1 is closest to the input jack. The farthest right tube. Since your clean works, you could find out which tube drives the clean channel, pull it and put in the gain position. If it's low volume on the gain channels, it's probably that V1 tube. 12ax7
thanks for rundown..sorry for more questions, im trying to take out the v1 tube and its really stiff and jammed in..is it suppose to be like that or should i just keep trying???the one closest the back comes out ok..the other 3 are the problem.

Try using a circular motion when pulling them out, but definately don't break it. They should coume out easily.
ye i got it..ive tried v1 and v3 and no joy. Ill try the other two and if not,ill bring it to a shop..
