Any thoughts on the production of thier last two albums? I'm pretty sure I remember seeing a 5150 on thier dvd for when they were recording "The Impossibility Of Reason", and I thought I saw a Valvestate head in it as well...but I like thier albums as far as sound goes. Anyone else?

I haven't actually heard their material, so I can't comment, but I heard they used an ENGL Powerball and Savage on their last album(s).

imposibility of reason was recorded through a 5150 with a mesa cab(V30's).they said that they didnt use any compressors or ts's ,just straight in, with the mid scooped.on the dvd it appears(in a short footage) that the cab was miced with an 57 and some condenser, im not sure which one though.

i dont know about the album, but in their last video they appear with engl powerball's. :D ,and besides that the tones are quite different from the imposibility of reason..

On the new one, I've heard Engl Savages, Ubers and 5150 II's were used. What actually ended up on the album, who knows. I'd say it's a safe bet that there is a hefty amount of 5150...And, there seems to be a bit of Engl as well. I don't hear Uberschall tones as much, but who knows with modern production and all.

Last I heard, Rob and Matt were using Engl's live, but Matt switched back to a 5150 for live work and a XXX as a backup. I think Rob still may be using an Engl...This is all speculation from the HC boards, so...

There's something about TIOR that makes my ears hurt before I've finished listening to it. I'm guessing it's something odd in the higher frequencies. There's a certain sheeniness to that record that I can't say I like, even if I take into account the pain it induces in my poor little ears. I would almost have guessed the guitars were all done through a POD if it wasn't for this thread saying otherwise.

i really liked the production on the self titled (latest) cd...i believe that the main rhythm parts are powerball and savage, and that they used something else for the leads

I've seen em in a lot of 6505 ads. They are listed as endorsers on the Peavey website, and on thier website it says nothing of them using ENGL's. ENGL's website says nothing of them either. Doesn't mean they didn't have em in the video, but you know.

One of the regulars on HCAF, DerekB is an Engl dealer and the one from which Rob and Matt got their amps. He said it was a combo of Savage and Uber and some 5150 on the latest album.

Peavey's site used to have a pic of Matt with a 5150II and using the settings on that head, I got really close using my Mesa cab. This was during TIOR days. Even off the new album, it's pretty easy to cop their tone with a 6505+. Even my drummer commented one day how much my rig sounded like those guitars (ESP/EMG/6505+/Mesa std 4x12)

they used 5150's and mesa cabs for several years, i saw them atleast 3 times using that setup...i've seen them twice since the new cd was released, and both times it was a powerball and savage with those same mesa cabs...i believe they still carry the 5150's as backups, so they might still see some use from time to time
