Classical Guitar Position

i always play (practice) in the classical position. i stick my left foot on my amp to stop the guitar from sliding away. I find it makes long stretches much easier.

I always practice classical guitar in the classical guitar position... funnily enough...
sorry, yeah I wear my guitar heaps high to give that position when standing up to play (so I want to be Petrucci, who doesn't... haha) and yeah when I sit down to practice electric, I sit with it on my left leg, classical style...

that depends...
when I have something to put my left foot on -> classical position
if not, rest on the right leg
and yeah... heaps high :)

I have a proper footstool for classical, so I just use that as well for electric when I'm sitting down... When I'm standing up, it's actually high enough that I can't rest it on my knee, even if it's up on my amp or something, unless I'm in a full on rock star pose... :p

No offense to anyone, but I think having your guitar up too high looks dorky. I wear it high enough to play well but low enough to look decent without sacrificing too much playability.

I'd much rather look like a dork than develop wrist problems or compromise my playing even in the slightest.

I never said I played it super low, I wear my guitar somewhere in between high and low.

I don't doubt that it may be more comfortable for you that way and I wont waste time criticizing you for that (especially considering I don't know exactly how low you are talking here). Nevertheless, just because it may be comfortable for you or you think it looks cool doesn't necessarily mean it's not doing damage in the long run. Classical technique was developed out of two things: to prevent playing-related injuries and to facilitate playing as best as possible. So it's not a bad idea to take a hint or two from classical players. Again, not trying to criticize you, but it's something to consider.

I know what you mean, but it's tough to play in the classical position when your guitar is shaped like this:

I pretty much got used to playing my electric guitar rested on my right knee. The only time I play in the classical position is when I'm playing on my classical guitar, I figure this makes sense.

Anyways, the way I hold my guitar when I'm standing is extremely similar to Chuck Schuldiner's way of holding his guitar. Pic related.

Not too high, not too low, and the neck tilted upwards.

I don't reckon anyone looks dorky when they're doing insane runs at lightspeed up and down the fretboard... haha, fair enough, whatever is comfortable for anyone. I just really hate the punkers and hardcore players who wear their guitar down over their crotch, cos they only play the top string...

I would say that is high and ideal. I also play at that height.

The classical position is doing weird things for me. Like I cannot really find a good position of playing while standing up, but I think that is just a matter of my strap, because there is no grip on it.

I actually don't use my leather strap any more, cos they're limited in how high you can adjust them. I just use a cheap material one which I've put high enough that when I'm sitting down with it on my knee, it is actually being held by the strap still... this way when I stand up it is exactly the say height as when I was sitting down... It's pretty high though...

you can't really do classical position standing up, so I don't see the point of practicing that way unless you intend to always be playing with a leg up or a stool of some kind. I echo MrFast in that I like my guitar directly over my belt. Not too high, not too low, and I have the neck at an upward angle.

The other advantage with having the neck angled up, is that it means when your pick is horizontal to the ground, it's actually on a foward angle on the strings, which I find helps in gaining accuracy in speed picking... otherwise I have to concentrate on holding the pick fowards on that angle.
