Classics Reborn

It does seem like Germany is all power metal! Except for the bands you mentioned. Weird. You'd think Germans would want the more brutal music.

I haven't seen that movie in forever. Wow. It was a good flik right?
I would certainly rather be labeled thrash than hair metal! It must be true. You know how online is. If there was something to hate about them. They wouldn't hesitate to label them something lame.

Well power metal can be very powerful. For bands like Helloween, Manowar, those long established bands with a huge following, they don't just do loud but they do powerful and that probably makes up for brutal.

Shit, I can't remember seeing it for ages either. I did like most of those Clint Eastwood movies, I wasn't much on his cowboy stuff but those action cop movies he did around the 80's were pretty good.

Actually 70-90% reviews on MA is pretty good, I'm sure there will still be hate in there somewhere, there will be negativity, but even 70% means the reviewer thought it was okay.

Nothing makes up for brutal. :p Yeah I'm not saying there aren't good power metal bands. Such as Helloween, I'll take your word about Manowar. I've never actually heard anything. Their looked turned me off. And before you say anything! That's their fault! Not mine! But I know they are and have been around still, so they must be doing something right!

Same here. I couldn't watch those old westerns when they would play them on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. but he made some good thrillers.

That is pretty good for MA. The comments on youtube about that clip definitely show love for the band.

I haven't seen Helloween or Manowar in concert but I have "Absolute Power: the Day The Earth Shook" Manowar's concert from about 2005 and there is no doubt that they match power for the brutality of just about any other band. They also play some songs at speed and pay tribute to classic composers, but the music is as full on as pretty much any other band. So the way I see it is that all these bands can achieve the same thing, they just do it in different ways.

The old bugger has only recently made his last movie too, it's a hell of a career

Maybe the clip was released before everyone hated everything :)

Because it's always about the Teutonic 4 and nothing exists outside that. I learnt that from American media :p

Nearly everything has been better than the last few Destruction albums, like Anthrax I'm not convinced they deserve to be listed with the "big 3" but Sodom. But I'm not the biggest fan of Exumer, in fact I believe it was the first album's song battle that I first got told my votes shouldn't be counted because I didn't agree with the vox pop about which songs were the best. I liked Possessed By Fire, I just didn't rank the songs the same way as real metal fans. Not as much a fan of their newer stuff, but it's ok.

I like recent Destruction more than they deserve. I even contributed to the Go fund me for Thrash Anthems II. See if you can spot the alias I used and am credited for in the booklet!

Anthrax does seem like they are down a peg or two in terms of popularity of the 'big 3'. Their reputation amongst metal heads may even be lower. I remember a lot of guys in the scene back in Vegas who dismissed them due the experiments with hip hop and rap. Anthrax's recent albums have been top tier though, as I have argued repeatedly before!

I don't own Thrash Anthems I or II, I have heard them but didn't figure I needed a best of.

I think Anthrax has always been down a peg or two compared to the others, that's not to say they didn't deserve whatever that title meant because they did, but I just don't think they ever had the numbers. They certainly didn't have the numbers here in Oz until maybe SOE, but probably POT, and they certainly haven't regained those numbers since POT. As good or bad as their most recent output is Anthrax don't have enough loyal fans here to get themselves a headline tour, even a tour like Overkill that plays in 2000 seat venues.

I suppose in some ways it's a testament to their back catalogue that they can still play the same basic set they have been playing for years and people are still paying to see it. Although lets face it playing mainly festivals doesn't necessarily mean people are paying to see them.

It is awkward to see a band record a live album/recording at a festival and it is clear the crowd isn't really into the band. One of the most obvious examples is Grave Digger's recording of The Clans Are Still Marching at Wacken Open Air.

Yeah I've watched quite a few Wacken and Bloodfest videos and because they are recorded by the festival and not the band you can quite often see the crowd is not there for the band playing.

I just can't imagine them matching the brutality of some thrash and death metal bands. But I'm saying that without hearing anything :).

Yeah he has!

And yet you still wont listen to power metal :p

On your death bed an angel will appear saying that there is only two things that will save you and listening to 5 minutes of power metal is one of them, and your response will be, "give me another look at that picture of Rosanne in a bathing suit"

Hey Neptune, were you into Laaz Rockit back in the day?

I'm listening to their debut right now. I'm hot, it's as muggy as hell and I'm tired from being on my feet all day in the sun. Not sure if that adds up or not, but I'm not really feeling the Laaz buzz yet.

I'm struggling to find the thrash or power, other than in the Manowar like outfits several of them wear.
There is moments of riffs that might be close to thrash, they might even be full songs that are fast enough to hint towards thrash, but I'm not sure they are thrash.
This is their second album, I think the first was a little thrashier, but half way through this and I reckon there is really only one song so far that's close.
