Hey, any suggestions for free/donation-ware VSTs that are suited for clean guitar? The sound I'm thinking of is the intro the Metallica - The Day That Never Comes.

That's maybe a Roland Jazz Chorus (JC-120) 2x12 on the album as it has been since Justice, and unfortunately there hasn't been a sim made of that one, but there's Simulanalog's suite of amp sims that includes a Fender Twin in the pack (along with some other goodies).

And redwirez has a pack of JC-120 impulses for 10 bucks:

Another +1 for lextac, also check out ignite amps Anvil, that one delivers some great cleans as well.

Actually, i advised lextac because, it's very good and free ... But for Metallica clean tones, they often use a JC-120. I really find the amplitube very of this amp is really good ....

i've liked the Studio Devil - British Valve for a long time, but just by accident heard it on a clean track recently and loved it! add a little EQ, comp and Kjaerhus Classic Chorus and you've got a killer, clean tone. the best part, you don't have to deal with the overhead of Lextac.

Thanks for the tips. I tried lextac with a bit of chorus, just what I was looking for, but will definitely get around to trying the Anvil sims swell.

I've always liked Amplitube Fender for cleans - but if your looking for a Jazz Chorus type clean, a solid state one, you would probably be looking elsewhere. With the Amplitube Custom Shop you can try before you buy so just download the free shell and try out the various Fender models or the Clean Chorus 120 (their name for the JC-120).
