Can anyone tell me a pickup that sounds great clean? I'm looking for a sound similar to Jeff Loomis' (from Nevermore), or really just a pickup that brings a clear, crisp and clean tone.
Thanks

I really like single coil "strat" type pickups in the neck for a clean sound. If you have a humbucker in your neck, you can go with a split coil which will give you the option of two distinct sounds as a double coil and single. Of course a switch will have to be added to your guitar for that, but I think it may be worth it if you use a clean sound regularly.

I can't say that I've ever really given single coils a chance... i'll go to the axe-shop around here and check some out. As for the switch I would have to add... do you mean the pickup switch that changes from the bridge pickup to the neck pickup? or would i have to replace that one, or need a different switch altogether? sorry, I don't know enough about these things =/

I really like EMG SAs. Great clean and out of this world lead tone.
Would you happen to have any recordings of one of those in use? Or could you recommend any songs to listen to that you know of where they used one or something similar?

Regardless thank you both for the input

Well, I don't have them in any of my guitars (yet), but I've played I few that were SA equiped and the tone was great. David Gilmour used them for a while (I think he uses Kinmans now), so check some of his stuff out. I'm pretty sure you'll find great cleans and great lead tones.

Well I don't know how your guitar is set up. My two main players have a different configurartion. My Ibanez has the stock Ibanez pickup at the neck (pickup closest to the neck) but my Vandenberg has a single coil (which I installed in place of a stock rail) in the neck (single coils are those skinny pickups that you see on strats.) If your guitar doesn't have the single coil (skinny strat type pickups) in the neck, you can use a split coil humbucker. That6 is the fat pickup that looks like two single coils side by side and tha't more or less what it is. With the split coil there is an extra switch that allows you to play botyh coils or just one.
Indioo was dead on in his Gilmour post. David Gilmour is actually one of the people I was trying to emulate when I was looking for my clean tone and he has a great tone. That's not to say you can't get a great clean tone with a huimbucker pickup, but I prefer the single coil for that type sound.
