About how much "clean" singing do you like to hear in a Dark Tranquillity album?

So I may be the first to say this, but I think at least 50% would have helped. Projector is possibly my favorite extreme metal album of all time, and I am seriously distressed and upset by the band's decision to abandon the normal singing on both Haven and apparently the new album as well. Not that Haven is bad - it's just not up to par with the kind of inventiveness they did on Projector. Female vocals I wouldn't really worry about (though UnDo Control is a curious song), but using all growl vocals makes the band sound much more generic than it would otherwise. It seems too many closed-minded fans and critics have influenced Dark Tranquillity to go back to releasing solid traditional death metal albums, as opposed to actually saying something new with their music. It's not only a matter of vocals, but I'm worried that the musical variation will also be hard to find on the new album. Sadly, Stanne said in an interview that the time of their musical experimentation is over, and now they are doing what they are perfectly confident about. Well, in my opinion, there is great danger of the music just becoming stale really quickly as a result. I am not really looking forward to Damage Done, and find it rather heartbreaking that one of the few bands (along with Opeth) that seemed to have some originality in their death metal approach has ended up deciding to go back to their roots entirely too much and largely waste much of their songwriting and performative talent.

Hm, i don't think they did what the fans or anyone else "demanded" or anything :)
We all know they do what makes them feel better, without caring about what ppl think.
If they did get influenced by old fans' opinions, Damage Done wouldn't be the "bastard child of Haven and Mind's I", but another Gallery ;)

And it is my belief so far that they always want to change, if i recall correctly they've said they don't care about staying in the same spot and perfecting their sound, but ever-changing.

I would really be grateful if you could provide a url for the interview u mentioned, cause i'm really curious

@mad poet: up to a point, it is true that the days when dt diverged the most from some sort (if there is one) of death metal formula are over, at least for now. and yet i won't call this lack of inventiveness. once you've made one projector, you can't do another in the same vein: it would be as stale as sticking to the places you know. on the other hand, there is still no mistaking dt for any other death metal band around: dt's solutions to get through 40-45 minutes of any new release are still peculiar to the band and much more varied than i can see in others. the direction they're varied in, now that is something some might object to, but i guess debating this means somehow admitting they're still out there with something to say.
besides, although formally an all-growls release can be easily standardized, there are ways of doing something fresh and new without resorting to new tricks like, say, a trombone or all the songs being longer than 25 minutes. ;)

rahvin. (turn the nighttime into day)

I liked the little bit of clean vocals on the earlier albums, so with that in mind I was pretty confident when Projector came out, but honestly that album was pretty much a disappointment for me and therefore it rarely finds its way to my CD-player nowadays. They were just overdone on that album I thought, he sounded like he so desparately wanted to sound emotional, that he overdid it way too much...

That's also why I was so glad the clean vocals has almost completely disappeared on "Haven", just as if Mikael also realised Projector was a failed experiment.

So I'm OK with clean vocals in principal, but only if they're used like on the first 3 albums!

P.S. So I guess my vote should have been "less than half" instead of "none"...
