Does anyone know how to program a click track? My problem is a song that starts at 120bpm, picks up to 140, then 160, then back to 140. My friend showed me a Dream Theater vid where you could here the click change tempos. I need something i could take to our rehersal space. peferably a CD i could plug into the PA...

If you use Cubase SX, then go to Tempo Track editor and just edit the tempo changes to your preference. Whether you want the change to be abrupt or smooth, you can easily make it there. When you set all that, do what Hopkins suggested and voila - you have a click track on your CD.

I know for a fact that ProTools has a specific "Click Track" that you can enable/disable. It is under the "MIDI" tab, and there are options like: during playback only, during record only, during playback and record, first 4 beats (something to that effect), and one other option. Only thing is you have to set your preferences to the correct MIDI device (which can be your soundcard btw), it doesn't do it by itself. Cubase SX has the same thing pretty much, which has been explained already. NTrack also has it...in fact I don't think I've ever heard/seen a recording program without a click available. Yep.

This actually is pretty close to a question I was going to ask. I was wondering what you guy's would recommend for a non computer based, I guess a stand alone piece of gear? For a programable click track.

Alesis used to make a drum machine called the HR-16 that you could program tempo changes with. it's discontinued now and has been for a while.. but they can be had for $100 and less on eBay.

still, your best bet is to do it with software... once you do on your computer screen you will never go back to programming drum machines.
