yeah, I definitely need different preamp tubes for my savage....way too dark sounding and too muddy in the lows atm (if I turn the presence any higher it becomes to grainy)...

but I gotta say I do like how the engl and peavey compliment each other

engl+peavey 4tracked
engl double
peavey double

well, it's obvious which amp sounds more brutal, but the blend is pretty nice IMO.

goddamn guitar:

my settings on this one were:

gain: 4:00
Drive: 12:00
Bass: 12:00
Mid: 10:30
treb:12:30
pres: 10:30-11:00
depth: off

channel vol: 11:00
master: 2:00

no TS on the Engl
1xsm57 pretty much dead center of dustcap

yep, the engl definitely needs more high end sparkle without getting grainy....I'm pretty sure I'll be able to achieve that by replaceing the Ruby's with Chinese tubes in the preamp section....
I do like the smooth charakter of the amp (it sounds almost like a modeller or something to me...not the most organic tone of course, but it blends really nicely with other amps)

Not bad Lasse but you're right...it lacks something. Let me know if the preamp tubes can improve the sound, because when I changed all the tubes in my Savage60, there was no difference at all. It seems Engl sound is not too much tubes dipendent.

yeah im really, really not digging this yet, cant wait to hear what you can do with this baby with a change of tubes and a few more weeks of playing with it though!

Heh the peavey sounds alot better :D

And I agree the Savage sounds a little dead. What if I record mine with the exact same settings and micplacement and we can compare.

would be great...
cause with those settings and placement it should be MUCH brighter I think (remembering my last Savage a couple of years ago).

do you have settings you could recommend me?

I'll record it when I get home. One question though. Center of the dustcap is that straight into the middle of the speaker or straight into the point where the cone meets the middle "nipple".

Never really understood what dustcap was.

I'll check my settings aswell and share them tonight.

You can't use the same settings on the amps, the Savage is different, more scooped than the 5150.

Sounds good, but I def. dig the 5150 more right now. They do compliment eachother well though!

I still cannot fathom how you get such full tones with the mic dead center on the dustcap! Whenever I do this it thins out and sounds harsh as hell.

I move it away to get rid of the extreme brightness, but then lose detail.

The Peavey clip has way more mids... definitely sounds better than the Savage here, but pretty harsh sounding. I've never heard a Savage sound that loose/bassy though. They're usually really tight and clear.

Ok here are my recordings of a single guitar with the settings you're using. There is a difference though. Since I record at home I'm using Lead Level at 9:30 and Master at 9:00.
Two separate clips with different pickups and tuning:

Seymour Duncan JB Tuned Drop D - http://www.oep.se/ljud/JB.mp3

EMG 81 Drop Bb - http://www.oep.se/ljud/EMG.mp3

I don't have the freshest tubes in my amp(probably like 6 years old).

My settings that I normally use are like this for rhythm guitars:

Crunch Gain - MAX
Lead Gain - 12 to 2 o clock
Bass - 12 o clock
Middle - 12 o clock
Treble - 12 o clock
Lead gain 12 o clock
Presence - 9 o clock

Depth Off
Countor On
Smooth Off

When playing live I usually just turn the treble knob depending on what cab I'm using.

thanks heaps, I'm gonna give that a listen later

It would be great to see pics of the mic placement you guys are using, either generally or specific to those clips. When you're talking about being so close to the dustcap I can't help but think of the atrocity I get when micing there.

+1 million.

I've had a bunch of 5150s, 6505+s, etc...and being so close to the dustcap yields such a thin tone. I've also experimented like mad with presence/highs.

I know there is no "secret" to this Lasse, but care to shed some light?
