Coles 4038 ribbon mics

Can I put these right up against a guitar cab like a Royer or is that gonna destroy them?

If it's distorting it's too close, usually I'll have a 4038 about 2-3 foot from the cab.

I throw my Beyer m160 right in front of the JMP driven 4x12 without any problems...royers handle it too...
just try movin it towards the cab and listen

i believe the coles 4038 is a bit more sensitive to high spls. my friends studio has a pair. he said they were pretty sensitive and he generally knows what hes talkin about. ive used them as room mics for drums and they were fantastic. i dont know i would put them right in front of a loud cab. maybe a few feet back.

YEah they really are. Watch out!!! The thing that'll break the ribbon is when you palm mute "chug". My suggestion is alot more distance than normal (at least a foot) and angle the mic a little up or down...that'll stop the big low end air burst from frying it. HOWEVER....you can use em, in fact...I know of one big rock producer who uses one all the time for heavy guitars.
