What are the best and worst metal albums of this type? More often than not, I think that they fail to live up to the pre-release hype, but there are always exceptions.

For me, I really enjoyed Engram by Beherit. It was a new sound, but a welcome album that was definitely a good musical direction and one of the best black metal albums in years.

Off the top of my head...

Autopsy - Macabre Eternal
Angel Witch - As Above, So Below
Satan - Life Sentence
Morgoth - Ungod

Were all phenomenal. Morgoth really caught me by surprise. Had zero expectations but their early eps and full length were awesome annnnd it was being released by century media. It's like they decided their fans were right and went back in time and recorded this instead of Odium and whatever the fuck that last abomination was before they originally broke up.

Beherit, Burzum, and Satan.

I was particularly impressed with Belus; at the time I was expecting it to suck horribly.

The first two plus At the Heart of Winter are cool. I don't really enjoy much aside from that though.

and ya i never much liked any overall albums after PH either, although i used to really dig the closer on SOND and the title track on DiB etc. dunno if i would these days.
