Compression help??

I was messing around with compression earlier and i have a good mix of drums but the question is

should i compress the WHOLE drum track or just certian parts? like kick or snare
The mix sounded smoother when i compressed all the drums rather then single tracks but i lost a little volume!!

Does the same apply to guitar Compress the guitar? or not to compress the guitar I dont want to take away from a good sounding mix
