Connecting Mixer to Interface?

Hey guys. I feel like an idiot asking how to do this but thought you guys might be able to help me out. I have a behringer x1832 mixer and a focusrite saffire pro 40 interface. I was wondering if there was a nice way to connect these two. I like having the control over the physical sliders on the mixer, that's one of the main reasons i wanted to do this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot.

You aren't going to be able to hook up a mixer to an interface and use the sliders to control the sliders in your DAW if that's what your asking. You could hooky up your mixer if your interface doesn't have enough inputs for you, but I think in general thats about it.

Not sure what DAW you are using, but to have the physical sliders that control the virtual ones you should look for a control surface, for example i use the Korg nanoKONTROL hooked up to my laptop to control the mixer in Reaper. So you might want to look into something like that. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think you'll be able to operate any of your DAW functions with that mixer/interface combo. Hope that helped.

Ah thanks for the quick response. Yeah, i might just wind up using the mixer as extra ins since it has a USB out. We'll see how that goes. I'll be using Logic when i'm on Mac and most likely reaper or cubase when i'm on Windows. I dual boot both. But it's fine for me to use the mixer as extra ins in the DAW?

Near as I can tell, you won't be able to use that mixer for extra inputs either. You'd still have to be able to connect it to the Saffire somehow, which doesn't look possible. Looks to me like you can either use the Saffire OR the mixer, in which case I'd stick with the Focusrite and maybe sell the mixer and save for a good multi-channel pre to hook up to the Saffire, or perhaps a control surface.

Hmm, well I'm not sure how well it will work if you hook both the mixer and interface usb into your comp. In my experience, I used a berhinger mixer that I plugged all my mics into (since I was recording drums and my interface didn't have enough inputs) and then plugged the "tape out" jacks into the line in jacks on my interface and just recorded the mixer into the interface and it worked out okay, so you could try something like that. You can also try plugging both into your comp with usb and see what happens, worst case scenario it doesn't work out.

DAW is only going to recognize one or the other. not both.

The behringer xenyx series is a rip because it just outputs a stereo track via USB. I flipped one via c-list and made some money.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Route outputs from individual tracks via the Saffire to the line inputs on the mixer. Then take the stereo main out from the mixer and run it back into a stereo input/return on the Saffire.

You will be able to play back your song and mixdown to a new stereo track in your DAW, kinda like using it as a tape deck.

I'd sell that thing and sink some $ into some decent preamps. Behringer pre's are such junk, plus you are heavily limiting yourself if you are mixing a bunch of channels down in a stereo track. No drum replacement, blah blah blah, etc

Actually I looked at the back of that console, and you could use the channel inserts to send 6 channels of audio to 6 inputs on your saffire. It probably wouldn't sound great but you could use it for kick, snare, toms, then replace them and still have individual controls over each channel in the DAW
