Converters - holy crap, what a difference

I was shocked too when I switched from a motu ultralite to an apogee Duet.
I remember it was like a fabric has been removed from my monitors, like the highs are finally here!
I didn't notice this going from duet to lynx aurora, they seems to be in the same league, but I'll only can tell this when I'll get my pair of barefoot MM35, since I can't ear lot's of details from my tiny genelec 8020s !

Emrz, We´ve got a RME FF800 at the studio i work on, plus a Mytek 192 thing, a Hedd 192 and a Lynx Aurora 16. I swear i can hear NO difference whatsoever in any of them. The thing is, the room is really small (4m x 4m with a ceileing height of around 2.5m) and there is no acoustic treatment (my boss thinks this is bullshit). So your thread made me realize how bad i actually hear things in there.

btw, congrats for the purchase!

Room treatment and monitors play a huge role.
I feel like I'm in heaven now that I have room treatment, some killer monitors, and apogee converters!

Ermz, did you hook them up so you could do a proper A/B test?

I also changed D/A recently and I had a hard time setting up the A/B since most of the differences I heard came down to difference in level. When I finally got it set up properly, the difference wasn't very dramatic, but it sounded a bit different at least. I've repeated the A/B a few times since then and I can still hear it, but if I get even the slightest ear fatigue it all sounds the same.

Still have to make a proper blind test though, but I'll save that nugget for later, hehe... I'll probably just make myself disappointed.

Raelly the difference I'd be interested in hearing is how much it affects reamping... The D>A conversion affecting the DIs. I think the difference is so minor with most quality gear that EQ adjustments could be made to compensate...

I used to think that Joshua, but the reality is that what you're losing isn't EQ-related, but fidelity related. You can never EQ the quality back in, just as you cannot use EQ to compensate for a very low bitrate mp3.

I'd be interested to hear if there is any noticeable increase in quality in your next production with the ADI versus your last production without it.

how wud that be hooked up?

For API, look at camp crunch session.
For RME ADI8 look at this:

I think that would be most evident if I were to track one from scratch here, but unfortunately many of my clients tend to track themselves. The converter will mostly come into play for monitoring and when I do roundtrips to my outboard compressors. The few projects where I do get the opportunity to track DI back here should come up great though.

Start with some loop test;)
