Chicago’s Couldron play sludgy metal, with stoner and subtle noisecore/math leanings. Occasional pure rock breaks add further variation, while tight time changes make for a more complex sound. Heavy jagged riffs are juxtaposed by less distorted, tuneful refrains, and disharmonies are used to great effect, as are the more melodic guitar parts. The bass is solid, underpinning the sound while providing both groove and momentum. The drums are straight-forward and crushing, as the mid-paced music requires, and the vocals are a melodic shout above this. At times they border on singing, an excellent front to the music. The production is powerful and heavy, like many releases of a similar style. Psychedelic artwork is fitting considering the colourful songs, and a “Lord Of The Rings” sample in “Before The Gods” proves an interesting, and somewhat unexpected addition.

The six tracks on Couldron are well written, and competently performed. While nothing hugely innovative is happening in the sound, this is nevertheless an enjoyable, a solid debut. I look forward to hearing more from the band. Couldron comes recommended for stoner and sludge fans.
