This guy is my hero now. Just tried it on my 6-string Warwick and it worked like a charm. Strings are like three months old (I usually restring more often, but I'm playing Fender more then Warwick these days), and now they sound almost new. Thicker strings are just a bit duller, but totally suitable for rehearsals and even recording.

It works on guitars too. Well on wound strings.

Well yeah, on any strings where there is dirt between the winding.

Random3: there was a great explanation in the comments below the video. Shortly speaking, you're shaking off all the dried dirt, fat, sweat, etc. And it lets the string vibrate with more higher overtones.

Yeah it works amazingly well! for recording demos and that kind of stuff it kicks ass.

Doesn't last too long though, so I wouldn't use it for recording anything serious, as you'd have to check after every take to hear how the strings sound.
You're also right max, it works better on the thinner bass strings.

But I love it to be able to do a quick bass track for a demo or songwriting with old strings and without wanting to shoot myself hehe

wow, this is incredible.. thanks for sharing this with us, i´m going to try this out on my bass this afternoon!

Pretty awesome indeed! My cheap-ass bass player is going to love this trick.

You think there could come up some damage to the instrument from doing this in the long term, though?

tried on +year old guitar strings and it worked!
Not the same thing a fresh new strings but still awesome!
