Critique my mix. Be nasty.

The nasty part could be misinterpreted as sexual innuendo btw, get ready for a porno thread  I think the lead is a but too thin, it could use some delay too. Vocals sounds like they could use some saturation or something to make them fatter, cant really lock into it and dissect it right now but ill try later. Good job :)

Haha! Thanks dude! If you think the mix is sexual I guess that's a good thing! I could really use help with my vocals, since logic does not have a built in saturation plugin. I did use the tape delay though. Thanks a ton! I can easily fox the lead.

Well as far as vocals go i have a 57 with a pop filter about 5 inches away and I'm about 2 away front the pop filter. Is that to close?

I would say yes. Although I would not recommend a 57 for vocals, a majority of mics used for vocals have a cardioid pickup pattern, which means they have almost like a heart shape around the mic. Therefore the boomiest part of the mic will be close to it, and get better from there.

I have a pop filter about 5 inches away from my mic too (AT2020), but I then stand about a foot away from that.

Okay so I'm running that mic into a pro 24 what should I out the gain on? I feel like itnwillmsound really boomy if I do that. If you would recommend it I could easily trade a 57 for. 2020 I live in the nashville area so stuff is not hard to come by.

The Sure SM7B is a popular microphone for heavy music, it is also very inexpensive. As far as your pre amplifier and converter go there are too many variables for anyone to suggest a preamplifier level. Maybe try reading up on some generalised info on gain structure, those Saffire pro 40's are a bit of a nasty unit - you have to push the preamps really hard to get any level. I like to keep things just hitting the yellow in Pro tools, everyone will do things differently though.

Any recommendations? I'm using logic. People keep telling me about punching into certain zones but logic doesn't have that. Also all I have is my pro 24 interface. Im a recording newb this is actually my first mix haha

Like tmitchell said, the SM7b is probably one of the best for recording screams and such, but compared to a 2020 or a 57 its three times the money. I really enjoy my 2020, it just took me a while to figure out how it works well. I'd say try a 2020 out if you can, or if you feel really good buy a SM7b.

Well I can snag a 2035 for $90 nearly new right now. Do you think I should snag it? I exp with the 57 some more and I used it like a foot away with a pop like 3 inches with a lot of mattress padding and it sounds hella better. Might just save for an sm7b because I do really want one. Do you think my focusrite pro 24 could push a sm7?

As a general rule I usually just adjust the gain so that the meter in my DAW is hitting around -9 to -12. I do that for everything.
Have you tried a decent condenser for screams? I use my 990 on all of my vocals and have been really happy with the results so far. Monday I have a band coming in to track vocals and I'm going to try dual micing with the 990 and my new i5. I'm hoping to get the smooth sound of a condenser with the impact of the dynamic mic. Might sound like shit but you never know till ya try :p

Dude post that when you are done I would really like to see how it sounds and how you track it. Is it like just one take screams just into two mice at once?

For your first mix, not bad at all. First thin I noticed is that the vocals sounds "in front" of the mix, like it's not a part of it. Try adding some reverb, perhaps go a little easier on the lowpass filter/add some highs. Try high-passing your lead more to make it stand out more in the mix. Also, the drums need more punch, try parallel compression. (Google it if you don't know what it is, it's really easy and effective). That's what I think of the top of my mind when I hear your song. :)

Thanks dude, I have really worked on the vocals. The originals were recorded no pop filter at like 2-3 inches away from the mic. i have them re recorded with a 57 more than a foot away ans this time ive added some effects. If you dudes are still interested ill post the new song.
