They are pretty much Las Vegas on the water. Lots of booze, gambling, food, and people. I went on one once, and it was fun, but I'd never go again. But, my idea of vacation involves escaping to as little civilization as possible.

I went on one two years ago. Adrian is correct. I would do it again, however. Why? Because the crowds of people are doing exactly those things, meaning they are in the casino or on the party decks. Find yourself a lower deck to hang out on and you can watch the ocean for hours in peace and quiet. That was my experience, anyway.
And get a room with a balcony.

Yep. After 10pm was the best part, everyone else on the boat was drunkenly comatose and/or committing infidelity, so I was on the rear deck staring at the sea... and eating a lot of iced cream.

Only cruise I've been on was the Melloboat party thing in 2008, where Comus was playing. These boats are like floating cities of luxury depravation. I quite enjoyed the experience, the time spent on deck at night was indeed pleasant, but the context helped, not sure if I'd embark on some regular holiday cruise.

yeah i dunno, last couple years these ships seem to keep breaking down/losing power out at sea, septic systems failing, rivers of shit in the hallways, stranded in the middle of the ocean for a week with thousands of people and nothing to do, and if you actually make it back into port you have some idiot italian crashing the boat into the goddamn rocks. no fuckin way id get on one of those things.
