D.C. Cooper Vs. Tim Owens

Remember back when Priest was holding auditions for the Halford replacement & they auditioned D.C. Cooper? Do you guys feel that his addition to the band would have been a pro or con? He's a great vocalist, he's not a Halford "clone" like Tim was made out to be. Maybe the fans would have had an easier time with a singer like him, but not a Halford "clone?" It would have been interesting...:err:

I feel an original singer is worth 10 times the worth of a clone singer like Owens. Owens is one thing. A Halford ripoff. If a singer has originality and feel then he is the better to me. Everyone makes a big deal about Owens in Iced Earth. I love Iced Earth. But I dont feel he fits the style at all. But I do imagine that his name alone just up IE on the map.

My dear swine, I'm going to disagree with you a bit:

a) I don't consider Owens a Halford clone, because Halford is unique. Owens is a great vocalist who had the bad timing in Judas Priest (is not his fault is Tipton that the albums were so bad)
b) I don't like Owens in Iced Earth, I believe Schaeffer is not getting the best of him
c) D.C. Cooper is an amazing singer, but not for JP type of music. His solo work or what I have heard of him in Silent Force is alright. But I heard the later covering 'All Guns Blazing' and sorry but Cooper's voice can match Halford's either. He's not for JP, sadly JP music is tied to the voice of Rob more than Iron Maiden can be tied to Bruce Dickinson.

What do you think?

Let me tell you what I think!
A.) Tim is an amazing singer, I heard for myself with this latest Iced Earth disc. I take back anything negative I said when he was in Priest. I guess the word "clone" is a bit unfair. I do recall when Tim & Halford has a war of words, Halford said something like "there can be many impresonators, but only one king."
B.) I love Tim in Iced Earth. I feel that he has finally found a home. I look forward to him working along side Jon & I'm extermely excited about their future collaberations.
C.) D.C. Cooper is a great singer, loved what he did on the Moving Target disc by Royal Hunt. Also liked his solo record D.C.Cooper. I haven't heard anything by Silent Force yet, I'm in the process of tracking their debut disc down. My point was just what you said. Priest knew they were "tied" to Halford's voice. Why eslse would they hire a guy that was in a Judas Priest cover band?! I would however, would have liked D.C. Cooper get the gig. It would have interesting to hear what they would have come up with.

I've met DC and he's a super nice guy and he has a decent voice. I bought his solo CD, but his style is a bit relaxed for JP. I simply can't imagine him doing the JP classics.

I think TO is a good singer. Yes he does sound quite a bit like Halford, but I am sure that worked out great for JP live as their classic stuff is what most people went there to hear anyway. I have only heard one song with TO in IE, but I was never big on IE to begin with so it sounds like a wash to me. I have frieds that were flat out depressed when the other singer left, but they aren't for me....

An honest opinion. I personally would have been depressed had Jon left Barlow's vocals on the new record. His heart wasn't in it & when you have a mediocre singer to begin with, well it would have put the band in moth balls...

I agree with you that it'll have been a very interesting experiment. Actually me who never look for bootlegs will give a lot to find one of the concerts of Black Sabbath with Halford after Dio left the tour in 92.
I was thinking about this tread today as I was hearing Cooper sings in Gary Hughes "Once And Future King- part II", I still believe he's way too melodic for a band like JP, but again as you well pointed would have been nice to see it. The same as Eduardo Falaschi (Angra) who almost ended in Iron Maiden before they got Bayley. Most people blame Bayley for the failure of those albums. I don't blame him, I just believe he was unsuitable for the band, then again who knows what will had happened with Falaschi.

Cool

i've only heard the one ie track with barlows voice on it-on greenos page, but i think its a bit unfair to describe him as a mediocre singer sixx.like i say,i've only heard one track but i really liked the tone of his voice,it was good.i can totally understand that he needed to go if his heart wasnt in it though.

blaze was cool as fuck, and wolfsbanes first album was awsome.your totally right though wyvern,he really wasnt the right choice for maiden.it was all just far to serious for him.

Ahhhh, I disagree, Wolfsbane's first disc was their best work, I still think that was about 30 min of a Van Halen cover band from the U.K. We had our own version of Wolfsbane here in the USA, it was called Roxy Blue...
They did do a Killer version of Squeeze Box. Has anyone heard Poison's version?
It's disgraceful!

I know that Ripper said in an interview that when he would sing the old Priest tunes, he would end up singing in a falsetto in order to match Rob's range, but who doesn't? If you're going to play some one elses song, and thats what Ripper did on stage, you're going to try your best to sound like the original out of respect to the originator. This is in no way ripping on The Ripper. I think he is freaking awesome. I saw him live and he's just a ball of energy, but as for the Rob "clone," I think it's mainly done out of respect for Rob, The Band and The Fans.

Tim Ownens is a fantastic vocalist, so I will have to say that he is my preffered... I do not think heim to be a clone at all, he may have a similar sound, but he has his own unique input to a well-used vocal style.

Yeah I've never seen Ripper as a clone singer, his performance on the new Iced Earth album being another proof. Even on the last Priest live albums he sounds different.

As for DC Cooper, I've got a bootleg with him singing "You've Got Another Thing Comin'", which he sings perfectly, if not better than Rob (and I'm a die hard Priest fan). Thus I think he would be a great replacement for this kind of songs, but I can't see him singing "Sentinel" or "Painkiller" though.
Let him rock with Silent Force! Looking forward to the new album...
