In less then two month I'm in the army. Guys with no hair, screaming officers, early mornings, alot of crawling in the mud, etc. On the good side, I get an assault rifle... Hm, anyone with experience of this? How horrible is it??

If you are so nervous about going to army, why don't you go and do something more useful and interesting instead? I have heard that the situation for the "civil-servants" in Sweden is much better than in Finland - or am I mistaken? At least in Sweden you don't need to serve over twice as long as in army (6 months in army compared to 13 months of "civil-service").

You'll serve your country against imaginary enemies with worn-out material together with a bunch of neo-nazis/warheads/hillbillies - I can't imagine how it could be anything else than a fun experience. Give a few months of your youth and get nothing back, I mean, wiiie...

BiatchGuy said:wow, I didn't realize military service was mandatory over there..
and you guys aren't even under constant threat by impoverished third world nations with imaginary nukes either... heh
zodi said:Standard service is 7,5 month here, but I have a special 10 months service. Woho!
But there is no rule about cuting off any hair. I can keep it as long as it is when I enter service, but I'm not allowed to let it grow longer. I know people with much longer hair then me who didn't have any problems.
Thanks for the support. I have had half a year or so preparing me so it doesn't feel that terrible anymore. Just strange being forced away from home like this.
That's one of the reasons why it feels so strange. There's no enemy. Even if there were a threat a bunch of 18-year olds with a few months of training and no mental preparation for real combat wouldn't help much.
Caelestia said:Sooo, even if you don't like it, maybe the whole experience won't be so bad if you try to see things from another perspective. Yeah, it's easier said than done. I'd probably be freaking out if I were in your shoes. But perhaps it won't be so bad!
When the democracy won't be there any more, it will be a bit too late..zodi said:I'm not afraid of getting killed or anything like that. But I'm not used to being forced away like this and not being able to do anything about it - it's a strange situation in a democracy.
I'm sure that if you don't want to be changed into a weapon crazy dork, it's rather unlikely that you will be turned into one, but i guess you already knew that.zodi said:Yes.. I'm sure my attitude will affect it. I'm trying be positive, but I don't want to be to optimistic or cheery about it since I don't want to be changed into some weapon crazy dork.
