Broadband..?

I am changing service providers, and just looked into how much it would be to get broadband etc, and was damn surprised to see that you really do get fuck all for your money. I can understand it being more pricey, but damn, the cheapest deal with iprimus for ADSL is $49.95 per month with a limit for 355MB, but on dial up they have unlimited downloads and hours at $19.95 per month. Sure the speeds are better, but what is the point if you hit the limit early in the month? And to increase the amount of downloads you can use, the prices go through the roof.

Are any of you guys or gals getting a good deal with a broadband connection, or do you just pay ridiculous amounts per month?

Used to use Bigpond when I was there, and they gave you (I think) 3GB a month... (tho this may have dropped), and charged you through the arse for anything over that!

Basically, bandwidth in Australia is overpriced, and they pass all that directly onto you... with some cream on top for themselves.

Here in the UK we have BT Broadband for about $70/month unlimited (500k speed - but you can get a 1000k ADSL connection for not much more!).

I used to go through that in a day :) At least before Bigpond put the cap on!

I think Optus have the same deal...

Unlimited cable - :worship:

You will go through 355meg in about 4 days on cable Blitzy!

That's the rub.

At Lithgow Dial up speeds, I limit what I get, and still get near my 650MB/month.

With faster downloads, I'd kill the limit in days

Optus has something deal where if you go over your download limit in the month, they just revert your connection back to 56k for the remainder of the month, but you still have a broadband connection with all other optus users.
Thus.. people team up and download a shitload of movies in the first week, and then share them for the rest of the month.

No one can go through a 500meg downloads a month without porn. It's just not possible.

broadband in australia is so far behind most other places its not funny.

Im on telstra bigpond and yes, its fucked. They charge at around 13c per meg over the 3gig that you get per month.

Optus has a better system where they just cap your usage right down when you go over. If I could change over to Optus I would...but with instalation charges and shit it wouldnt be worth it.

Im with iinet ADSL for $79.95 a month I get 16 Gig and I use to have Optus 3GB Cable.

ADSL is much better value.

Depends what you want to do :

Download shit loads - go ADSL

Play Games and *MUST* have fastest possible connection - go Cable.

cheers.

I've got Optus cable, and I'm pretty sure what Sydo said was wrong. It's like that on some providers (IINet for one) but not Optus. On Optus, once you hit your 3G you're dropped back to 28k modem speeds, and it's done at the modem, so there's no way no how you're getting fast speeds again until it's reset. That said, I struggle to use 3G a month most months. Especially when I'm working, because I only us it for like a couple of hours in an evening.

I know a few people on iinet (like los4) and they seem pretty happy with it.

What about Dodo, they claim to have unlimited download for 64 dollars a month. I only know this from the annoying adds

I've had 6 Meg a second before :) That was sweet. Although it was only a relatively small file, so it only took a couple of seconds. I'm paying something along the lines of $80 a month.
