Dark Tranquillity - New Album "Endtime Signals" out 2024-08-16

Tomorrow they are playing another show and they promise another fun and interesting setlist. Although that one would probably have less rare stuff, still wonder what's gonna be there, I hope for more Projector, The Mind's I and Construct.

Also, Sundin has posted a breakdown of the artwork for the album. Interestingly, the album was supposed to be named "A Bleaker Sun" at some point. Wayward Eyes also has an artwork, looks like it is the fourth and final single.

Honestly, A Bleaker Sun would be a pretty cool name for the album, though Endtime Signals does admittedly feel more modern DT to me— A bit more detached and matter of fact. I’m more partial to the old title, but it is what it is.

Wow, nice setlist indeed. Format C: For Cortex is one of my all time favorite DT songs. And as much as I don't really care for We Are The Void, the one song I do really like is The Fatalist. It's been my ringtone for the better part of a decade.

So, I've just listened twice or thrice during work. I don't dislike the new songs (except for Neuronal Fire), but something feels a bit off with a lot of them.
I'm also not very much into the production on these (especially after listening to the punchier sounding Character this morning).

So far for me it's kinda like this, categories and songs inside categories are sorted from most liked at the top to the least at the bottom:

Great songs:
- Not Nothing
- One Of Us Is Gone
- False Reflection
- Shivers And Voids

Good songs:
- The Last Imagination
- A Bleaker Sun

Okay songs:
- Unforgivable
- Drowned Out Voices
- Enforced Perspective
- Wayward Eyes
- Our Disconnect

Don't like:
- Neuronal Fire

I only found one site that said it had a leak of the album, and it actually didn’t, so I won’t get to listen to it quite yet— Your review worries me though, I felt the same way about Moment.

Majority of DT's post-2007 albums have been this way tbh. A few really good songs, a bunch of average songs and a couple of clunkers per album. You know you'll never get anything bad from DT (WATV aside), but you know you aren't going to get anything amazing either.

I can't say I was hugely excited for their album coming out. I'd kind of forgotten about it. I'll give it a listen at some point, but am expecting it'll be similar to Atoma and Moment in terms of how I feel about it.

I think it’s worth noting that in a way, particularly next to IF and AtG, DT’s consistency was its strong suit back in the day— I think that consistency’s become their biggest weakness at this point.

To be fair, Construct is one of my favorite DT records, if not the favorite, and I know that isn't the popular opinion, so my view might on this might be a little weird. I don't have anything on Construct that I would put in Bad or Okay category; most songs are firmly in Great with a couple in Good.

Atoma and Moment are in the same boat for me, most are good, a couple are great and the rest is just okay.

This time I have as much in okay/bad as in great/good, and tbh I'm a bit disappointed.

For some reason heavier/faster songs aren't doing much for me this time, and some of the songs like Enforced Perspective, Our Disconnect and, especially, Neuronal Fire just turn into mush at some point. Just compare them with something like Through Smudged Lenses or The New Build, it is kinda similar, but something is very off.

The highlight for me this time is definitely the mellower side of the album with clean vocals.
Not sure what else to write at this point, will listen again later. Also, wonder what's on the bonus tracks, which as far as I can see didn't leak anywhere. My copy is still somewhere between Austria and Serbia so will have to wait until someone else puts them on the Internet.

Anyway, I'd take this over Foregone any day.

DT making everyone wait, lol. Would be awesome to get Single Part of Two and Format C again, but probably unlikely. Am guessing we'll see at least 3 or 4 new songs?

Wonders At Your Feet. This sound is pretty anaemic though. Sounds like DT put through Battles production.

So far (will just update this post as the show continues)

The Wonders at Your Feet (2000)
Hours Passed in Exile (2002)
Terminus - Where Death is Most Alive (2007)
Atoma (2016)
Phantom Days (2020)
ThereIn (1999)
Lost to Apathy (2005)
The Last Imagination (2024)
Shivers and Voids (2024)
Unforgivable (2024)
Not Nothing (2024)
Our Disconnect (2024)
Neuronal Fire (2024)
Misery's Crown (2007)

They've tried to fix the sound on stream but it still sounds fucked up

Phantom Days the best it's sounded so far. Say what you want about PD as an album song, but it sounds phenomenal live.

ThereIn definitely a song which benefits from a live environment. Good on CD, but even better live.

Unfortunately I haven't been in a metal mood for a while, but I'll be sure to get into the mindset as best I can before I spin the new album. I liked that design doc Sundin posted on Behance. The artwork looks rather basic from a distance, but there's a lot of interesting textural work when viewed close up that gives it a lot of depth.

Hot take: ThereIn is good, but most of the songs on Projector are better. Maybe not in a live environment, though.

Not sure about TLI live. Phantom Days packs far more of a punch, as does Atoma, if we're comparing songs from recent albums.

Shivers and Voids & Unforgivable both sound awesome though. Looking forward to hearing the album version of these.

Just to confirm, DT have in one night played as many songs from their new album as In Flames have from Foregone, lol.

Very unusual show with six new songs played live, but makes sense considering this show coincides with the new album being released today. The non-new album songs were all excellent. Shame about the sound, especially at the beginning. Idk if it was the band's sound or the stream, but it sucked pretty bad until Phantom Days.
