I have my own take on this

I am an employer and the band are my employee's

I pay them to entertain me and if they fail to do so I will no longer pay them

So in effect it's a poorly paid job relying on the public to pay their money on your product and hope it's enough to break even and earn a living from it

Well technically you pay them so they can make even more money for you.
 
And that's why there's touring, merch, all that stuff, although now that I think about it, putting music on iTunes would probably be a lot cheaper for the record company and would probably get more money to the artist.

Apparently artists only make about 4p from each iTunes download, which is far less than they'd get for a record (I think it's normally £1 for the whole band)
