hmmm
You guys know that I work as a bouncer, right?
Seriously though... when I was young I used to HATE bouncers. Not all of them, but the ones at certain clubs anyway. So when me and my mates got into the industry, we were determined NOT to turn into the typical arsehole bouncers that everyone hates.
Now first of all I really don't know ANYTHING about what happened with Hookes (haven't even read the article yet), and if he did get hit in the back of the head, that's just unacceptable. Also if the guy had an assualt charge pending, then I'm pretty sure he should NOT have been elligible to work in security / crowd control.
So anyway... having said all that - yes there are some total dickheads working in security simply because they are meatheads with no other skills other than the ability to beat people's heads in... but for the most part they're the minority.
But getting back to my point about not wanting to turn into typical arsehole bouncers... what you then get is constantly dealing with drunken, irrational, aggressive MORONS who just want to piss you off.
I've been pretty lucky so far and not had anything too bad happen to me, but the amount of times my mates have had people spit in their face, punch them in the back of the head, threaten to stab them, burn down their house, kill their mother... the list goes on and on... it's unbelievable! And over what? Because you've politely asked them to take their drink off of the dance floor? Or not smoke in the non smoking area, or because you've woken them up and said "come on buddy, it's time to go... let me call you a taxi and we'll see you next week"
so with that kind of shit going on, it's no wonder guys eventually become a bit less patient. Our policy is usually something like "ask them once, then TELL them once, then (if they still won't walk) drag them out".
Actually come to think of it there were guys in my club last night that knew Hookesy (so they said anyway) and of course were talking about all this stuff about bouncers, but they also kept saying "not you guys... but at OTHER clubs...."
So don't get me wrong, I'm not sticking up for the bouncer, as it sounds to me like he's definately done the wrong thing and is one of the guys that give the lot of us a bad reputation. Just giving you guys a bit of an idea of what it's like from the other side of things tho....
Anyway.. back on topic. This is real shame and just a stupid waste of a life, especially the life of one of our countries sporting greats.
Hopefully justice will be done.
