Dawn - Slaughtersun

The 2 CD release is good, I dont think they adjusted the production any (at least with all the other material, I hadnt heard Slaughtersun prior to buying it). Marksveld or someone would probably know.

Well, I'm not too fussed about original vs. re-released, unless one sounds significantly better than the other. Right now, the 2CD release is a bargain at $15 (...including the original “Slaughtersun” album along with “Naer Solen Gar Niber For Evogher” album, “Sorgh Pa Svarte Vingar Flogh” EP & the rare “The Eternal Forest” demo...) but I'm just wary of re-releases having their production butchered to pieces.

To be honest, Slaughtersun never really stroked me the right way. Something about the melodic construction of a lot of the riffs sounds so... simple and pedestrian, and lacking some of the power I'd usually expect/demand from an album like that. Once or twice I've enjoyed it quite a bit, but never to the "OMG CLASSIC!" level that a lot of people do. Definitely not on par with "Storm of the Light's Bane" or "Somberlain", if that's what you want to compare it to.

I'm pretty sure none of the albums on the 2-CD set have had their production fucked around with. Basically, you get four releases of pure epic, melodic glory for the price of one Cd. This is valulable music, GET IT!!!11

I've always liked Dawn. Their music has a certain quasi-mythical air about it that Dissection lacks. Dawn's music is kinda like sophisticated melodic black metal or something. It doesn't share the same verse/chorus/verse/etc formula that a lot of Dissection songs follow. Dissection's music is an immediate listen, and it's not hard to understand what they're doing. Dawn is the opposite, IMO. I didn't really appreciate Naer SOlen until years after I got. Now I'd place that album ahead of any Dissection album and Slaughtersun.

Sacramentum's Far Away From the Sun is another one of these sophisticated melodic black metal albums. I'm loving this one more and more. The ANUS fanboys got it right with this album. I didn't really like their last two albums, though. Haven't heard the EP, though I've heard it's similar to FAFTS.

Naer Solen>FAFTS>SOTLB

not to hijack the thread, but are Lord Belial or Mork Gryning any good? They are sometimes compared to these bands.

OK well I just won the original pressing of "Slaughtersun" (digipak) on eBay for $8 p&p. I've seen this go for $30 so I'll probably get the 2CD re-release anyway and keep this original for trade fodder or prosperity.

I hope you like it. I really do. But I'm afraid you'll think it's simply a case of too little, too late.

But who knows?! You might love it!

I do love it! Erik burned me a CD-R about 6 months ago, and I've been waiting for The End to restock the 2CD release, and I just noticed they have it. At the same time, I found the original pressing on eBay for $5 and figured I'd just bid $5 and see what happens. Amazingly I won - I was even hitting the refresh button in the dying seconds thinking I'd lose, and nobody outbid me. I was the sole bidder so I guess I got lucky. The seller's even got 100% feedback and takes paypal. :)

Oh, OK. Awesome then. Carry on, nigga.

Sunday nights are 'eBay' night, heh. You always find the stuff in the dying minutes of the bid, just because I guess so many sellers put up their auctions the Sunday before.

I always put mine up on friday nights or some time during saturday. most metal and ebay and -core dorks are onlne then.

Lord Belial is ok , "Enter the Moonlight Gate" is known as their best .. The rest is below and pretty much always the same.

Mork Gryning .. well , they're quite good , "Maelstrom Chaos" and "Return Fire" are basically Dissection + keyboards + more heavy leads . Their last is more avantgarde stuff ala Arcturus , all those 'modern' bands etc.. not so good IMO.You've got the first album also , I guess it's like the two I mentionned..

Lord Belial, no; boring and stupid black metal, though I think some people in here enjoy them somewhat and can prehaps give a bit more detailed description than I, it was quite a while since I heard them.

Mörk Grynings first album is kind of decent, basically melodic black metal with an epic touch. Shall I upload a track?
