Debate: Book the flight now or wait

I will probably fly for the first time this year!

I always drive, as it is only 8 or 9 hours from south Florida to atlanta... I love the road trip and all, but it won't make sense this year, since it's just me and 1 more friend... All the previous years we had 4 or 5 people in the car, what made travelling by car very cheap...
But dividing all expenses by only 2... I doubt it will be worth it..

Call it $4 more per tankful, times three refills per week, making it $624 more per year. To someone making, say, $12,000 a year, that's 5% of your income. Not for gas....for the INCREASE in gas.

Amtrak used to offer round-trip excursion fares, with $12 return fare after buying a one-way. Worth checking into, if they still offer it.

As a warning, the northbound Amtrak Crescent from New Orleans has routinely operated several hours late ever since service was restored after Katrina.

I was totally on the fence about all this, but with the hype of gas prices skyrocketing, plus the rates are actually around their average low for me, I booked our flight yesterday for $207/ea all taxes/fees included. The plane tickets themselves were $188/ea. I've paid as much as $225/ea, and as little as $145/ea (after 9/11). I could gamble & wait, maybe save $10-$20, or pay more than double that. Screw it, I booked now, and have more time to pay for it.

For Rocky Racoon:

It's not a fixed income, but not all of us live in crowded cities or urban areas. I'm paying over $100 a week in gas, JUST for work. If I only bought a tank a week, an extra $4-$5 wouldn't be huge. Multiply that by the 3 times a week I fill up, and it is a signifigant increase. It's price gouging, and whether we're aware of it or not, we're being "conditioned" to think that $2.00/gal is the new "cheap gas". Personally, I don't care to give the corrupt oil companies any more of my money than I already do to run my car, and heat my home.

You better watch out for the motherfuckin snakes on the motherfuckin plane!

We drove last 2 years. LEave on Thurs at O'Dark thirty and get there in time to pick up tickets and check in and get ready for the pre-party. We Leave Sunday am and are home in time for dinner. I think we're driving this year...yer welcome to ride with us......I may have to do some of the driving..it might scare the cops away ;)

"Delta passengers can continue to book on Delta with confidence," Edward Bastian, Delta's executive vice president, said in a statement. "There has been no disruption to our service. Our pilots are performing professionally, flying as scheduled, and together with all Delta employees, are taking good care of our customers. We are doing everything in our power to remove the snakes from the motherfuckin planes"

Three refills per week? That's a hell of a lot of driving for someone who only makes 12 grand a year. I'd tell them that they can make better money than that closer to home -- just apply at McDonald's.

I note a trend, here, Justin...

I bought my tickets already, Northwest on the way down and Air Tran on the way up. Northwest has a hub out of Detroit and their financial status is as precarious as that of Delta.

Of course, Northwest has since instituted some very creative pricing policies (Pay extra for... AISLE SEATS!) in hopes of getting out of their financial hole. Because I'm a creature of habit, I've taken the same time flight down and back since PPIV, but this year, it was an extra $50 for the usual flight back. Uh, ack. AirTran had one about the same time for less than the usual cost...

... Of course, I had no idea until I was ticket shopping that AirTran flew to Atlanta.

(And I think - I hope - my friend got her tickets as well! If not, it might just be me  )

Hey there, it is Linda, ate some breakfast with ya.... flying can really be cheap...I fly into Dulles pretty cheap, anywhere from 160 - 180 roundtrip.
i have never been on a train so don't know how that is, i am sure a little longer.. let me know if you need any help.

Ok, I've got the Gold Badge, and the pre show tix (thanks eaeolian). Now normally I'd wait on the plane but with fuel prices what they are, it maybe astronomical by summer...

any thoughts on where airfare is going. I've also looked at taking the train down... 88 bux one way from VA. But it's 13.5 hours and it's add an extra day to the trip....plus I have no clue where the Atlanta train station is in relation to PP.

Dubs, I commute 40 minute each way to work, and I do understand that gas prices could be a concern to people for that very reason. But my comment was in regards to how it relates to PP only.

Perhaps on $12,000 a year, a vacation to PP might be the wrong financial move. Just a thought.

And as far as PP goes, I view it as a vacation, and therefore I factor in additional unforseen costs that will be beyond my control. Perhaps this year, gas falls into that category. Either way, gas prices will not affect my driving this year, as it will be split 4 ways. Certainly if someone is coming alone it might not be practical. And hell, the drive is part of the experience for me, and I'm willing to do it at whatever increase in gas costs.
