hello everyone
well, the title is self-explanatory...

i am looking for good examples of modal music
namely, dorian phrygian lydian mixolydian.
ionian aeolian are out of concern, as they are just ordinary major & minor.

mode is quite a hot topic, but honestly i can only find very few examples, and not to mention some of the sound dumb as hell.

not necessary be metal ones, can be any genres
but of coz i would love to see metal examples:Spin:

thanks in advance.

Modes were a hot topic back in like the 60's I guess.

Miles Davis - So What is a famous example of the Dorian mode. Or Greensleeves. A lot of stuff by Joe Satriani is modal. You honestly should be looking at jazz for modal music though. Most of modern metal is more like chromatic/idgaf. I guess some folk metal might be modal.

Please link me to a source where he said that. When your music is as simplistic as Motorhead's, you don't really need modal scales. Although they help if you want to experiment.

Funnily enough, a Google search reveals that there is an old music text that refers to modes as "gay and lively" if that helps.

^lol

Another example is jazz fusion death metal is full of modes:

Atheist - Elements
Pestilence - Spheres
Ansur - Warring Factions
Cynic - Focus
etc

ah..thanks for replies guys.
i am checking pieces from Joe Satriani now
Surfing With The Alien seems to be in dorian mode.
will check out all of the suggestions in this post for sure.

jazz is definitely not my thing , still better nothing anyway.

before starting this thread, i did try chants , late-medieval ~ renaissance stuff, but um..overall they sound pretty odd to me, and kind of chromatic,
take dorian mode as an example
many of them keep switching between natural 6th and raised 6th, or even without 6th degree at all
so....i feel old stuff is adding difficulty rather than helping me to understand.

all i want is some simple, straightforward, catchy modal music, but they seem to be.. luxuries.

i didn't mention Locrian because it lacks perfect 5th, making it rather difficult to be catchy IMO.

(thanks for master yoda's jokes )

Some old folk tunes are often modal and easier to understand than chant. I'm not home now but I'll try to look some up for you later. Also some early counterpoint music such as Palestrina could suit.

Locrian is pretty common in metal

I will say this, it's much rarer to find a song "in the key of" a mode than it is to find modes themselves. For example Metallica wrote entire albums in the key of e minor, but modes still exist in their guitar solos as a result of matching the chord changes.

Here.

Phrygian: Jefferson Airplane - White Rabbit

Dorian: Greensleeves

Lydian: Joe Satriani - Flying In A Blue Dream

Mixolydian: Beatles - Norwegian Wood

Locrian: John Kirkpatrick - Dust to Dust
