demon of the fall

The chorus.

Sorry, just couldn't resist. As for the connection between the line and the rest lyrics I assume it's either a reference to the period. The song is set in autumn, when the man comes back to approach his love-interest, but she runs away from him, the demon. Hence, demon of the fall. Or it has to do with his own from "grace" so to speak, this is where she totally shuns him, and he's thus fallen.

Maybe.

I've come to realise that some Opeth songs are not meant to be dissected, appreciate it for the mood alone.

good post, thanks
never thought of 'fall' as the season :err:

Not saying that's a definite answer, there rarely is with lyrics, but it's one interpretation that makes sense. Maybe it's a mix of both, drawing on the connotations of both the verb and the season.

lol just noticed in your avatar there's a demon of the fall:heh:

Hehe. Keen eyes there, mate. That's the connection I was trying to make. It's from Paradise Lost, the the fall being Man's in this case. I love the book and it seemed suitable for this place. That's actually the first connection I made when I heard Demon of the Fall, but after checking the lyrics I think that it's not very likely Mike was paraphrasing PL.

I don't exactly know the story, but I thought somewhen the main character (represented by the vocals) dies. Oh wait, he's actually dead at the beginning. Anyways, at some point of the story, that characters learns the "false love" of her love.

"My breath in the sepulchral mound.
You know that your night is my day.
The final spark that blew life into me,
The Demon of the Fall."

You have to know that the last lyrics of each preceding song are the title of these. These were the last lyrics from "The Amen Corner", so the song is not necessely totally based on the name, but also on the preceding song.

"The wind cried a lamentation
Before merging with the grey.
Demon of the fall."

Is the moment he learns the "false love turned to pure hate". The "wind" is actually himself, crying for that reason. The "Demon of the Fall" is some kind of metaphor, I guess. The Demon is the lie of her love, and the Fall is the repercutions on him, and the way it "kills" him to learn that.

"The final spark that blew life into me"

I guess Mikael likes to do like "predictions" from what's to come in the next part of the story. In The Amen Corner, that's what he does. He ends by telling that something (the lie from her love) destroyed him, his life. Oh well, that's sound like a good explanation.

So that's all I could say, and that doesn't mean this is all right, but I guess I'm near of it. What do you folks think of that?

P.S. It's not "Fall" like the season, but "Fall" like falling. "Torn by the arrival of Autumn"... I think Autumn is pretty sad too.
