It was pretty cool - no great shakes. More of a relaxing night after the chaos of the previous evening. We got nice and liquored up on vodka and red bulls (courtesy of Zod after we stopped at the always impressive Vintage Vinyl on the way up) before heading in to catch the last half of Overkill, which we regretted as we were both in the mood for their brand of traditional thrash and slash. Mike Portnoy guested on one of the tracks which was a cool bonus (say what you will about Dream Theater but Portnoy's a monster behind the kit).
We ran into both Christina and Metal Rose in the venue (we ended up sitting in Christina's section most of the evening as it was more centered and there were plenty of seats open in the upper level). We drank some more and caught the last part of Arch Enemy - not bad, but neither of us were in the mood for the music, just checking out Angela. Seriously though, I have to revisit Wages of Sin as it's actually quite cool.
Next up were Opeth - who basically are what they are. If you go to an Opeth show to hear the music in a live setting, they're your band. They recreate the sound extremely well but with each passing time I see them it's painfully obvious that their show simply lacks energy and stage presence. Akerfeldt's genuinely funny between songs but it's not enough to overcome the fact that all he does during the songs is look down at his feet and stand virtually still. BORING!! Aside from that, the sound was great and I was in the mood to hear "The Leper Affinity" so that was cool.
The last band we caught was Lamb of God who basically brought the house down. Make no mistake, they definitely put on a great show and had the crowd eating out of the palm of their hand. I'm not a huge LoG studio fan (sometimes I get into it, but it has to be the right mood), but live they bring it every time. Energy, enthusiasm, stage presence and the right amount of crowd interaction. These guys are getting bigger and bigger all the time, and I can at least say they work very hard at it so kudos to them.
We both decided Megadeth didn't have enough drawing power for us to remain around. We both caught their full set in the front row at last year's version of the show and didn't really have much interest in doing the same from the upper level. Megadeth in their "Rust In Peace" heyday were a must see attraction. Nowadays it's just a "there's nothing better to do" option. The album "Rust In Peace" still slays though.
So, that's it in a nutshell.
