Devin Townsend Project - KI

Check out this new video of Devin tracking some vocals for the next album... The music sounds awesome, and his approach to tracking is interesting to watch!

I'm also thrilled to see that he's lost the boiler in the gut. He was starting to sweat the Arby's 5 for 5 deal for a bit there. I am devastated, however, about the loss of the skullet.

Hahahahaah, especially obvious when watching the parts of the studio diary of vocal tracking for "Sworn to a Great Divide" where he's holding the camera around his chest looking up at his 3 chins :lol:

Yeah the new album it´s hard to get with a few hearings. But songs like Terminal and Winter makes the album worth. They are really wonderful pieces of music.

What kind of mic is that?

NM I think it's a SM7b... crazy that he's monitoring through the speakers and laying down vox.. that mic must have good rejection.

It's a fairly common trick to track while monitoring from speakers, to get the vocalist to that live performance mood.

Wow, ya learn something everyday.. How do you avoid the backing track bleeding onto the recording track? Or is it so minuscule that it doesn't matter?

My experience has been that even with condensers it's so miniscule it doesn't matter - think about it, you've got a loud voice within like 6" from the capsule vs. sound blasting from the monitors like 8 feet away and at the rejection angle of the mic (as it should be positioned) - unless it's really soft vox (which could just be tracked separately with cans), the bleed will be totally drowned out by the vocalist, and the parts with no vox can just be deleted! And this is from experience, btw, not in theory ;)

"Larn...? What is that?" Haha.. great vid. Devin is a funny dude. And the song sounds amazing.
