Devin Townsend Project - KI

That interview with Rock Sound kinda saddens me, as it pretty much puts to bed the idea of SYL ever coming back, as it seems Devin really doesn't like the screaming vocals any more, and that he's content with doing his softer stuff. Don't get me wrong, I love his solo stuff, but I still fucking love SYL even more.

but at the same time the next two albums are supposed to be his heaviest stuff, so time will tell what kind of vocal style he employs on them

Yeah bless him.. SYL is great and offcourse we want more, but i can actually peacefully close the SYL chapter knowing what he has done was with passion, and without that passion it would be just average and soulless.
What SYL has done has been a amazing trip, for me it all started with city and how crazy that disc is... i loved every SYL album after that, no exceptions.

Ki is great.. but not my favorite DT stuff (for now).. i am into his vocals A LOT on this album but im looking forward to the next two albums.

I love this album.

When it first popped through the door I wasn't really sure (crappy CD player in the kitchen accompanied by noisy kids is not a good listening environment), but since then I've played it a lot and it's really grown on me to the point that it's probably getting up there with my favourite albums of the last few years. It's very mellow and angsty, and quite different from his previous stuff, but this is a man bareing his soul to the world and is incredibly beautiful and moving. There's some wonderfully tasteful guitar going on too; stuff you'd normally expect someone like Gilmour to do. Plus he somehow manages to make clean guitars sound heavy at times.

Can't wait for the next album. If it's even half as good as Ki we're got a real treat in store. :D

Yeah, Devin slipped a copy of the latest and greatest to a friend of his he ran into when he was in the store I work at the other day. His friend was there to monitor shop. I suggested "Why not kill two birds with one stone? Let's have a listen to Devin's new stuff to demo the monitors?" He liked the idea, so we swapped it across many popular favorites including the Yamaha HS80M's, HS50M's, Adam S5's, KRK VXT6's and the VXT8's (it sounded especially good on those, not too surprising as Devin told me on that same visit or the one before that he has a set of them as his mains). Sounds. Freakin'. Amazing. The guy has got to be the most musical person I know, hands down.

As for the drug question, I remember him telling me once that he doesn't drink or do anything anymore, to paraphrase. I'm pretty sure he was talking about medication, if anything. He's a pretty focused guy; I really doubt he's into smoking grass en mass. I've known a lot of potheads in my time. Hell, I live in the second most famous pot smoking city in the world, but I sincerely doubt someone could have the accomplishing power that he has while being a heavy, or even casual weed smoker. But, hey, I could be wrong. I'm not married to the guy or anything.

From what I understand, Dev is also a bi-polar as well. Right before Alien's release, he stated in interviews that he basically went batshit insane because he went off his meds for BPD. I'm guessing the alcohol and the pot and other drugs also perpetuated this problem, if he truly is bi-polar, and as such made everything a lot worse than it had to be. I also read an interview, I believe right after City's release, where he stated that he had done time in a mental hospital as well.

Yeah, but I was responding to his post saying that he couldn't believe a weed smoker (even a casual one) could become as successful and accomplish as much as Devin, and I was referring to the vid where he says he used to be and how hard it was to break from it because it had been so intertwined with his creative process

True. And I actually didn't watch the video. But yeah, I think all that stuff is behind him now. What I meant was he's a super busy guy these days with a ton of projects on the go and it's hard to imagine him getting all of them done like he is if he was smoking weed constantly.

And yeah: Apparently he was an absolute fiend back in the day :heh:.

Do you all have this as well?
Whenever i get new Devin material, it takes me at least 3-4 times to really get into it.
first two times im not really THAT impressed, but as i keep listening it really grows on me until i find it brilliant like all his previous stuff.. Ki is a grower as well for me.

Is he legitimately bipolar? And did you know if he actually spent time in a mental hospital before/during the making of City?

KI is the Devin only album that did not get me on the first listen. I'm still having a really difficult time getting into it and I am a huge fan of his.
