Tailgaters? In Bolingbrook? Not the greatest place in the world to see a concert. But then again, Diamond Head is not exactly striking while the iron is hot with this tour.

Caught this show last night at an old converted theater. Not one of the usual local venues. Only about 150 people were there, but the crowd was enthusiastic.

Diamond Head were in great form, I really enjoyed the show. They were super tight, the singer was spot on pitch, everybody played well, the sound was good. Dang does Tatler have long fingers, funny the things you notice when you're only 15 feet from the band. I hadn't kept up with Diamond Head for the last 20 years, but I knew about half of what they played including stuff like Helpless, Electric, and (of course) Am I Evil.

"Are you evil? Are you EEEE-vil? ARE YOU F**KING EVIL PORTLAND?" Wonder how many times they've done that bit.

There were two local openers, the first one didn't do much for me, but the second Witch Moutain was really good. Kinda early Sabbath meets Janice Joplin. But that certainly doesn't help any of the rest of you.

As much as I love complex prog stuff with lots of backing tracks, it's really cool to see 5 guys just play without a sequencer or a laptop or a click track.

If you have any interest in Diamond Head or early Metallica or just melodic hard rock, I'd highly recommend this show.

Pretty sure I'm hittin' this up in Kansas City next week. I hope they do Sweet & Innocent. I know they've played it live with the reformed lineup (as recently as 2010 from I've seen). But it'll be a great show if they just stick to the classics!
