At the suggestion of a few fellow ProgPower posters I decided to pick up "Unity" by Rage. I was a little skeptical after listening to "Down" in the MP3 section on the ProgPower site. However, after giving this disc a few spins, I'd have to say it's quite good. Currently I can't get the opening track, "All I Want", out of my head. Talk about a kick ass anthem! They better play this track live, or someone's getting hurt. I'm not sure if I love any of the other tracks as much as I do that one, but the whole disc is very, very good (I've even grown to enjoy "Down"). I was expecting yet another cliched Helloween influenced Power Metal band. However, nothing could be further from the truth. If you haven't checked these guys out, or have done so in the past but wasn't impressed, I'd urge you to do so.

I concur entirely. I wasn't initially impressed with "Down", but I gave Unity a chance, and it's great. My personal favorite track is "Set This World on Fire".

I'm really happy to see that people are giving Rage a chance.

While I was in DC last weekend (for the SymX/Seven Witches/Division show), the friend I was staying with let me sample tracks from several of their albums ranging from early to current work. I thought they sounded pretty damn cool, and now I'm looking to buy a few. :) I know I'm definitely looking forward to seeing them at ProgPower.

I tried, but it is just boring, dated music imo. They just don't do it for me. Oh well, I can't like every band I guess. I'm there for Nightwish anyway!!!

Well, naturally, Nightwish will be the highlight of the weekend. :)

Hey, alright GZ!! I can't remember if I recommended them to you at the Symphony X show or not, but I know I would've if we had talked about them. Rage pretty much rules. They have changed their sound several times throughout their career, but have always managed to maintain a consistent high level of quality in their sound, without ever, EVER sounding like happy Euro power metal. For a mix of their sound from other eras, I'd wholeheartedly recommend Trapped!, Black In Mind, XIII, Perfect Man, Secrets In a Weird World and Missing Link (with Trapped! and Missing Link probably having the most in common, and XIII having the least in common as it was part of their more subdued but just as killer "symphonic" era).

Rage rules.. always loved them. i have every CD/single/ep/video they have ever releasaed.. including japanese versions... i think i should bring everything for Peavey to sign! hahahah
btw i saw them at wacken in 2001, awesome live show

SX kicked ass. I saw them again on Saturday, and they kicked ass yet again.

I believe we did discuss Rage. I mentioned that I had ordered "Unity" and you recommended "Trapped" and "Black in Mind". I intend to pick up both. Thanks.

I downloaded "Unity". I listened to the first track...I like it. Alot. I will listen to the rest of the album before I make a judgement..and get my hopes up...

NP: Spiral Architect - A Sceptic's Universe (just downloaded this...holy crap, what have I been missing?)

About Rage - Unity has some really good stuff, some decent stuff, and some downright cheesy stuff. I Think musically, Rage are one of the best Power bands with great Prog tendencies. Wagner, Smolski, and Teranna are excellent musicians. Lyrically, they are a little lowbrow (choruses are to long and too often repeated) and vocally, not so good. I'm hoping for the better live than on cd situation.
