DigiDesign releases MBOX 2!

Well... I'm sure it was worth every penny man. I like your recordings :)

Thanks... I mainly use the MBox as a means to run Pro Tools as a glorified file transfer utility, but the role of Pro Tools in what I do is growing over time.

What are the big selling points of the Mbox2? As far as I can tell all the features are almost identical to the original apart from 'superior sound quality(???quantification needed)' and the fact that it runs 32 tracks, as opposed to the original which I think does 24 or something.

Here's what's new:

  • Zero-latency monitoring (the old MBox had a lot of latency issues)
  • MIDI (the old MBox did not have this)
  • 4 simultaneous inputs (the old MBox could only use 2 analog or 2 digital at once, not all 4)
  • Better case design (in my opinion) is a lot more practical for throwing in a laptop bag, etc., no stupid "feet"
  • Better sound quality (the old MBox had very poor shielding and was very noisy, I bet they fixed this!)

Kazrog - are you a Mac guy? Just curious if you have ever used Sonar on a PC? I am trying to ascertain why everyone is so enamored with Pro Tools. I realize most production houses and studios use the app... Is THAT the appeal? The fact that all of the "big guys" use Pro Tools? Is it the insane amounts of advertising that they do? Is it kids watching MTV and Good Charlotte talks about using Pro Tools? LOL.

What is it about PT that makes it so popular and apparently powerful? I have been told the MIDI functionality is quite weak??

The last time I used PT was MANY years ago, a version called PT FREE that ran on PC with any hardware. Now it seems you MUST HAVE digidesign or compliant hardware to even run that host...

I don't mean to come off sounding abrasive or whatever, and I'm not PT bashing, I'm just wondering what the appeal is?!?!

pt free was pretty crappy. i use pro tools LE 6.7 right now mainly for its ease of use and compatability with other peoples sessions, but im switching to logic pro 7 here in the next couple of weeks. ill be getting the RME HDSP 9652 for converting and a presonous digimax 96. i cant wait.

Congrats on the new gear. I've tried ALL of the daw apps, Nuendo, Cubase, Logic, Sonar, etc. Logic to me, was the most ALIEN of all of them. I felt like a German living in Montana trying to learn to speak Japanese. That app is NUTZ to me.

I'm a Sonar fan myself. Just trying to understand why PT is the number one, big kahuna, supreme enchilada DAW host.

yea actually same here, i have no idea how to use it yet. but i will learn. i started with cakewalk way back when then moved to cubase for a couple years, a brief stint with sonar and ended up on pt. logic was always the one that didnt come easy to me. but ive read up on logic pro 7 tons and it sounds like its what i have been wanting so ill just have to learn it.

Pro Tools (Sound Designer) is the original professional DAW. All the other programs are basically copies. It's like, if you had to pick one, would you rather listen to Slayer or Lamb of God???

About 4 years ago I swapped from using Cubase on the PC to Logic on mac and have never looked back.

I came from a more traditional background, using analogue desks with tape machines/ hard disk recorders and found logic to be really intuative. I havent mastered all of it yet and I rarely use midi gear these days but logic 7.1 Ive found really easy to use. It also has so many built in things that the only third party software I use with it is drum a gog.I also found that once I was running 7.1 I was able to sell my pod xt and bass pod.

I currrently working on an album and logic has everything I need to get it done without the technology getting in the way of the music. Having said this once all the edits ect are done Ive been given the oportunity to do the final mix through a Neve VR and would be mad not to.

(ive just read this back and no, I dont work for Logic)

wtf ?

hey! i love slayer. i love lamb of god. Why does one have to choose ? Am i obliged to ?

Actually i use pro tools and nuendo. I like them both.

why there´s always the need for maniqueist opinions ?

Well if at any point in your life you wanna work in a studio you pretty much HAVE to know PT like clockwork, i use Logic 7.1 myself but i try to keep ut to date on PT as well at uni, thinking of getting m powered for the audiophile card i have lying around just to get to know the program better.

I think that you missed my point. What does "maniqueist" mean?

This is gay, i bought an Mbox only 4 weeks ago!!! :yuk:
My sodding luck

On a more positive note. its looks like a great update for a peice of hardware that is getting extremely dated. I wonder if they would do an upgrade scheme (i doubt it but, meh)

I'm not a Pro Tools fan, but I do like it the more I use it. I still use Digital Performer most of the time, because I think it's the best. I haven't spent much time in Sonar but I didn't notice anything great or terrible about it, it seems alright.
