Yeah, Automated Dialogue Replacement.

VocAlign is commonly used by film guys who replace poor sounding dialogue shot on location with new dialogue recorded in the studio. It looks at the old dialogue and the newley recorded one and matches it together so that it fits the lip movements of the person on the picture better.

I guess you could use it for background vocals and whatnot, but it's pretty expensive I think?

VocAlign is not just for ADR.. it works fantasically to more tightly align doubled vocals that may have been a bit sloppy.

Right, but he's going to be using an M-Audio Firewire Solo card for his interface...

+1. It's definitely saved my ass on a few sessions with sloppy singers. I've even used it on sloppy doubled guitars, with pretty good results (this can require some tricky manual editing as well, though).
