Considering one of these as a cheap alternative to the tube screamer. Heard nothing but praise for this pedal. Anyone had any experience with it? I've read lots of decent reviews on harmony central, just never sure whether to trust the info.

Haven't used that particular pedal, but I've got a DigiTech Hyper Phase and I've had a couple of others (the flanger and chorus). The phaser is okay, I've got one setting that I use for everything and it suits me fine, but it's quite versatile if you want it to be. It's very brittle and digital sounding though - and it swallows all the low-end from your tone. I'd never use it on a recording without laying a dry signal underneath it.

Like I said, I haven't used the Bad Monkey, but based on my experience I wouldn't want to use their distortion pedals if they sound as harsh as the phaser - especially as an overdrive for an amp.

Everything I've heard on the Harmony Central Amps Forum says the Bad Monkey, as opposed to the rest of their pedals, is actually good. Digitech got this one right, apparently.

I wouldn't trust the Harmony Central User Reviews (everyone's either gushing about something or they got a fucked up one) or a magazine review, but HCAF is usually pretty trustworthy. And the Bad Monkey is hugely popular on there. That and the Boss SD-1 seem to be the best liked of the inexpensive ODs.

I had one. Paid $39 beans. Not too bad! Like 808 more, but that is a pretty good monkey. If on budget, you can't go wrong.

Some people have said they sound more transparent than the tube screamers and also said they prefer the bad monkey, in some reviews. I just want it to tighten the flubbyness is my dual rectifier, is it up to the job, similiar to what a ts9 would do?

It should do just fine. Unlike the TS9 (or other Tubescreamer-flavored pedals) the Bad Monkey has low and high EQ rather than just a single tone control, so you can dial some of the bottom end back in if you need to.
