I am really hoping they're not going to subject him to some humiliating investigation and forced leave or anything like that.
As far as I know, it's a matter of procedure to put an officer on administrative (paid) leave when they've shot and killed someone, while the circumstances are investigated to make sure that the shooting was justified with regards to both the law and the events in question. I don't think the officer in this case needs to worry about being humiliated, though; as every single police comment I have read said that he acted heroically & saved even more people from being killed. With so many witnesses, the investigation into the officer's shooting of the killer should be pretty plain and simple, & he'll likely be back on the job any day, pending any counseling they may wish for him to participate in.

When I heard that “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott was murdered while on stage, all I could think about at the time was then I met him when I was 15 at Zia Records by my house in Phoenix, AZ. I waited some hours to get my poster autographed by all of Pantera, most importantly my favorite metal guitarist of all time. Years later, I had the privilege to talk to him at an adult level about 3 months before this tragedy happened, at the age of 22. With a beer in my hand at the famous Rainbow Room Bar and Grill on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood, I ran into Dime by the cigarette machine and asked him if I could speak with him. We talked about a lot of things for about 5 min, like when he played Mesa Amphitheater in Mesa, AZ on The Great Southern Trendkill tour in 1996. He was real responsive and friendly, and I wished him much future success in his new band Damageplan which I was impressed by with the work he did on their debut album New Found Power. When I thought about how we said goodbye, what happened was Dime and I hit both our fists together, and I said, “See ya at the Damageplan show in Tempe, AZ and his typical saying he said to me was “You know it brother,” I basically cried the second I heard the news and reminisced on that great moment.

He was such a down to earth guy, and influenced my life as a guitar player all throughout my teenage years. It was spiritual to get ready for a Pantera concert and to hear the man play live growing up. This affects all the metal communities worldwide, it will affect me for the rest of my life, and he will go down in history as a guitar legend and as a lifestyle. As a musician, I am not afraid when I perform on stage, even if a band doesn’t have any security, there is that sense of decency at least for a human not to harm another human over music. For this person with mental illness or whatever it was that triggered the murder, the stalker like obsession for musicians or any celebrity should be reported immediately to authorities. I don’t think this has ever happened before in the history of music, as far as someone getting on stage and executing someone while they are still handling their instrument. I will never forget this tragic event, to me it hit harder than 9/11.

We dedicated our show to Dimebag Dec 10th, 2004 at The Marquee Theater at the same venue Damageplan performed about a month prior from the show. The show started out as a local metal bands fest, but it was declared a memorial for Dimebag with about 800 in attendance. Channel 5 news did a coverage story about the issue of violence at metal shows with me and some of the Motive members. Our vocalist Nathan Gearhart did guest vocals with a thrash metal band from Phoenix, called Motive, they performed Fucking Hostile by Pantera. R.I.P. Dimebag, shred some licks with Chuck Schuldiner in the spiritual world, and we will meet again. My deepest condolences go to the family and friends of the victims in this berserk asinine shooting.

Ah I havent looked at the board in a while so this is the first time I noticed this thread.

Pantera was/is my fav Thrash band, and one of the influences that got me solely into metal. So although I never heard Damageplan, it was a real shock and a bit of a devastation to hear about his death.

Such a senseless act, and now all of the peoples lives that are ruined, the victims and their families and friends. It's really something that reminds you of mortality and the fact that one second is all it takes for the whole world to change.

Phil Anselmo statement about Dimebag 13.12.2004

Philip Anselmo's (SUPERJOINT RITUAL, DOWN, ex-PANTERA) friend "J" has posted the following message on the official DOWN forum in regards to the tragic death of DAMAGEPLAN/ex-PANTERA guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott:

"I don't have a big official statement. I do have a lot of inside knowledge on the PANTERA feud from Philip's side and tonight he gave me the green light to let everyone else in on what I know. He trusts me to do this, and I take 100 percent responsibility for anything that is inaccurate, but I'm confident you all know I'm not going to touch on this subject unless it's from the heart. He didn't even give me any specifics except for the final part of this post... he just wants me to tell people what I know to be true.

"Philip loved Darrell like a brother, always. They accomplished things together that most wouldn't even dare to dream. None of us can know what it's like to be riding such a big machine, it changes the face of music and brings joy millions of people's lives around the globe. The rewards are big, but the stress is unimaginable if things don't go perfectly. Yes, PANTERA broke up and there was a lot of shit-talking through the media. There are two people on this board who would periodically ask me about what's going to happen with PANTERA in the future. I told them each time that I don't know when, but I'm 100 percent sure that we will see PANTERA together again. I told them that when PANTERA does get back together, you will know somebody who never lost faith, not for a second. Why did I tell them this? Because I know Philip loves those guys and when he was ready, he would reach out to them and try to make it work again. I had the feeling that one morning (afternoon maybe), all the 'Cowboys From Hell' boys would just roll out of the rack and say 'Let's go!'

"Of all the time I've spent with Rex and Philip, I never badgered them about PANTERA, but the subject did come up every once in a while. As for Rex, he would refer to the state of things simply as 'silly nonsense.' All I ever got out of Philip was something like 'Nyaaaa... I just don't feel like sitting down and writing PANTERA riffs right now.' ... and that's it! No crazy accusations, name-calling, or carrying on. As a matter of fact, in the middle of all the heat, Philip described Vinnie as 'the perfect drummer' and that Vinnie could drum more perfect than a drum machine if he so chose. What he said of Dime, he also repeated tonight. 'The best of the best.'

"It's sad that the media would irritate the situation so much. Countless times, Kate and I would listen in on Phil doing interviews. Always, always, always, the jackals wanted PANTERA dirt. Sometimes Philip would give it to them, sometimes he would not. However every single time I was there, he expressed his love for, and wished luck to Vinnie and Dime but that was somehow left out of the final print more times than not. I was at Philip's house a few weeks ago and I informed him that I handle the official PANTERA site now, and he asked me if I talked to Dime. I said, 'No, when was the last time YOU talked to him?' With a sigh, he said 'Three years.' Not a 'Fuckin right 3 years' not a 'Yeah three years and it's gonna be three more'... but the dude was genuinely disappointed about the situation. I could tell... the time to patch things up was drawing near.

"There's more I want to share, but it's almost 5AM right now, and I just managed to hold myself together long enough to get that out.

"Philip isn't hiding out or waiting for the right moment to speak, he's in Texas right now searching for answers to this tragedy the best he can. There was one thing he asked of me, that I humbly bring to you all:

"'Darrell my brother. The best of the best.' — Philip H Anselmo"

I say we all e mail him and (very bluntly) tell him that he is a moron...damn elitist asshole. :)

Umm...to whom does this refer? I feel like I'm missing something...

I think he's talking about Mr. Grim from the article posted earlier. (BTW I totally agree that we should all tell him he's a moron...damn elitist asshole)

I can't stand pretentious assholes like this guy. People so far up their own ass they're blinded by the light shining out of it. So... I wrote him an email.

I'm writing to let you know how appalled I was to read your article on the Iconoclast concerning the late Darrell Abbott. I've never seen such a display of elitist views and judgmental sweeping statements. I myself am a big fan of the genre you so irrationally hate, and although the like or dislike of this brand of music is obviously down to personal taste, some of the statements you made were just plain wrong. For example, I quote "[Darrell Abbot] was an ignorant, barbaric, untalented possessor of a guitar and large amplifier system." Dimebag was a great guitarist, both technically and in his composition, and to say that his music is "lacking ... anything approaching even the smallest iota of intellectual or musical interest" is quite blatantly not based on fact. In my opinion there's no way you should be allowed to call Amiri Baraka racist when your all-encompassing generalisations of the fans of metal are undeniably as blind as racism. Many, and dare I say MOST of the world's best musicians and guitarists today belong to this genre of so-called talentless musicians. This is publicly accepted opinion; guitarists such as Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Michael J Romeo are fantastic musicians by any standards, even classical. I'm sorry, it's probably unreasonable of me to assume that you actually know who these people are, it's not like you've just denounced their entire way of life without so much as basing your opinion on anything remotely concrete.

But wait, isn't this very email disproof of your argument? Since I'm a metal fan myself and according to your article I shouldn't even be able to use a computer (on account of my knuckles dragging along the floor), never mind string together words of more than 6 letters. And describing all metal fans as ugly? What kind of a statement is that? Have you met every metal fan on the planet? I take personal offence at the fact that you think I'm so deformed that I can't go out in public; let alone have social engagements such as friends and a girlfriend; when we've never even met! You know what elitist isn't even the word for people like yourself. judging by the utter tripe that you've written here I'd put you into the same category of people as a certain historical figure, who not too long ago put the entire world into a state of terror because he decided to put into practice all the views of irrational hate and labelling that you have so aptly demonstrated here. He too called those he didn't like "sub-human", although I believe the word he actually used was undermenschen. Am I not displaying enough subtlety, wit, style, and emotional range? Who are you to dance on the man’s grave like this? It occurred to me that to some extent in your article you are in fact describing yourself when you talk ok a culture of death, ugliness, and depravity.

Great job with that! I was going to e-mail him, but I figured that there would be absolutely no point, considering the fact that an elitist is impossible to convince of the truth. That guy is a seemingly self-important, ignorant prick, who has a very skewed view of the world and society as a whole. Which is why elitists are among the most ignorant beings on the face of the planet. Wishing for the best possible society, economy, government, and basically completely flawless human existence... Is it just me, or does absolutely none of that seem even REMOTELY realistic. And seriously, comparing Dime to classical composers isn't even a legitimate comparison, besides the fact that both are music. Other than that, comparing Dime to say, Bach is just stupid, there is no real comparison. Anyways, if he replies to your e-mail, post the reply, I think we should all see what this asshole has to say.

I think if we can spell "elitist" then we are doing better then he is giving us credit for, but I see your point, and I think the e-mail that Victory is Mine send was very well articulated. I can't see him replying with anything other than what he has said before.

All right...not that it's gonna do much good...

BTW, I challenged him to listen to SymX before ragging on the metal genre again. Probably he won't even be able to appreciate it, but I had to say it.

Dear Mr. Grim,

I am quite offended by your treatment of Dimebag Darrell's death--as well as your treatment of his fans. While I have never been into Pantera or Damageplan, I AM a fan of a good number of metal bands, among other genres of music. As such, I've had to deal with this stereotype against metal fans that you are propagating with your article.

Before I get into that, though, I MUST say I am appalled by the nerve you show in denigrating Mr. Abbott's appearance in this article. Worst, however, was calling him a "semi-human barbarian". Again, I did not know him personally at all, but what I have been hearing about him says that he had family and friends he was good to, and he treated his fans with respect. Comments like yours would be bad enough if he were still alive, but it's even worse now because Mr. Abbott cannot defend himself and his family and friends are undoubtedly aware that this sort of thing is being written.

It seems to me you really know nothing about the metal genre, or you would be aware of a large number of very talented bands that create albums that are technically strong, emotionally powerful (and not just negative emotion--positive ones are included, as well), and call upon the listeners to use their brains. I suggest you investigate bands such as Symphony X, Ayreon, Blind Guardian, Dream Theater, and Killswitch Engage (the last of which has lyrics that, if you bother to read them, are genuinely Christian in nature even though the name "Jesus" is not stated), as well as a whole host of other bands I would be happy to recommend.

I would especially suggest Symphony X to you--in addition to allusions to many excellent classical works, their original arrangements (both choral and orchestral, the latter through synthesizers) are truly mindblowing. If you are indeed the classical music guru you claim you are, you should be able to catch every single classical-music allusion in their work (which is the "decoration" upon their own excellent songs, mind you--they are a very original band). Their mastery over their instruments is equally inspiring. I would be glad to provide information on specific Symphony X works to listen to, or works by any of the other bands I have named--IF you are open-minded enough to take me up on this challenge and listen.

I also take great exception to your description of metal fans. I certainly have not become a twisted assassin wannabe as a result of listening to metal. I have a wide variety of interests, strong, loving family ties, good friends--and I laugh and smile just as anybody else does. I do not (as you seem to imagine) wallow in depression and anger. I have been highly successful in my academic studies (don't get any ideas that this letter was written or revised by anybody besides myself), and I am told that I attire myself well. You may believe I am the exception to the rule, but I can assure you that is not the case. And just as you did not know Mr. Abbot, you do not know those fans you saw memorializing him whose looks you did not like. You are engaging in blatant prejudice--judgment on first sight, knowing nothing beyond that first sight.

I think at the VERY least, you should apologize to Mr. Abbott's family and friends for the way you have insulted a man who can no longer defend himself, and for the hurt that they will undoubtedly feel when they find out what you said (and I mean WHEN, not IF--you know how word travels on the Internet). You also owe his fans--and metal fans in general--an apology for broadbrushing them. And finally, you should learn more about the metal genre before dismissing it all. Again--my challenge is open to you, if you are brave enough to accept.

i emailed him a couple of days ago when Zach showed me the article.. i know it wont do any good, and most of the emails probably dont even get read.. but i felt like it was important to do it anyway.

The metal community has been wonderful to me, and I certainly dont view myself or anyone I know of in the ways that Grim does. It wasnt a rude email at all, more to show my own personality, as many of the emails everyone has sent has done also.

You'll never change the mind of someone who is as closed as that, theres no point to even try, but its out of respect to Dime and to everyone of 'our people' that I show my support.

You all do realize that any disparaging email he gets, no matter how well-written, will be viewed in his own arrogant mind as further proof that he's correct, right? Especially given that the barrage of "you fuckin dirtbag" emails will far outstrip the politer ones.

It isn't worth emailing people like this, because their heads are stuffed so far up their asses that anything anyone has to say will simply add to his sense of self-righteousness - certainly won't make him feel bad, or recant.
