One of my favorite bands that I have never heard referenced on this board. I know they are not power/prog but I have rarely met anyone that didn't like something from the. These are my two favorites:

Recently, I watched a tribute special to Chet Atkins that originally aired in the 80's. Mark Knopfler was one of the featured guest and the dude rocked the house! I was quite impressed with him after watching that.

I thought Brothers in Arms was very good, especially the title track (may have some relevance today). They were a very tight band live and Mark Knopfler is a very good guitar player. I saw him when he toured with Clapton a number of years go.

Love the earlier stuff. "Tunnel Of Love" and "Telegraph Road" are fantastic...

Same here.

Of note to me though, is that "Brothers In Arms" is probably one of the best produced albums I've heard from anyone. Unbelievably clean sound. Thankfully produced when DVDs were a new thing, and before the loudness wars really got going.

"Song for Sonny Liston" from Mark Knopfler's solo EP 2005 is excellent, as is most of his work. I especially like his understated guitar passages. No one does a better job at fingerpicking.

Their "Neck & Neck" is some of the best guitar stuff ever recorded!!!

I love Dire Straits - grew up with that shit - Mark is a fantastic guitarist and an incredible songwriter.

His brother, David Knopfler, ain't half-bad either - I really like a few of his solo albums, especially "Cut The Wire".
