Most geeks like the SansAmp sound. I think it's too thin in the mix. Honestly I think a nice gain overdrive is good enough. I have the new SVT-5PRO and it has a separate section for an overdrive which you can use exclusively or combine it with a clean channel. It's pretty nice. I tend to just blend it in since I don't like a real super distorted sound on bass.

I have the B5-R, which is the cheaper version, and when I'm playing bass, sometimes I add a slight octave into the blend, but I rarely use the overdrive/distortion channel... I've wanted to check one of those SVT-5s since I heard about it...
