Djent/poly-core mix

Hey guys I wanted to finally upload this mix that I have been asking a shit ton of questions. After learning how to slip and apply that to my mixes, I had finally gotten the time to record a friends band heavily influenced by After the Burial, Veil of Maya, The Contortionist, and Animals as Leaders (ect)

I got to take my time to get everything right, unlike every other session I've had.

I'm just going to get into the situation and details and then let you guys give me you input and let me know if you think I did okay.

I recorded them in a room probably 12x9 with 8ft high ceilings that they had "treated" with carpet and egg-crate on the walls and ceilings. Drummer had a Tama StarClassic with evans g2s coated on heads, the floor tom was fucked though, so I had to replace it entirely. Snare was Little Squealer. Kick was SuperkickII. Cymbals were a mix of A, Z, AAX and HHX.

Guitars were done on a 5150, standard cab vin 1960s. Mic'ed with an I5 and SM57 centered on cap...

Bass was a medium level Ibanez DI'ed.

I used only T-Racks for compression of instruments and on the master bus, drums are blended with SuperSonic drum samples 30% toms and snare. Kick was replaced entirely. Gate and verb were standard plugins. Bass was

I do realize the snare flam, I need to slice the transients up a little more, and some of the tom fills seem odd, but were slipped in time, the drummer didn't have the song down to exactly how he wanted- it was more of him freestyling it. Guitar mutes need to be cut a little too.

Couldn't wait any longer so it's still a LOT of needs work, and vocals.

Let me know what you think- I worked hard on this and appreciate and advice or blunt criticism.

I think you've got a good starting point. For this style I would scoop the kick a bit more, it has a bit "too much" in the cardboard frequencies :) So from like 100 to 250 or 300 hz or something, I would scoop that out a little. Maybe compensate with a slight boost in the meaty area of 40-50hz or something. The guitars are really "messy" but that's probably due to the playing. Sounds like they could be better off with slightly less gain to be honest, it's either that or they're not played "clean enough". Maybe more editing and cutting out unwanted noises could help but I don't think that should be necessary.

That was just a few quick thoughts I had while listening through the clip. I did listen on headphones that are NOT suited to be used for any type of commenting though so keep that in mind, haha :) I hope my feedback helps in some way at least! If I have any valid points, they will come out anyway - as in people will point out the same stuff and so on.
