Do Better Guitar Cables Make An Audiable Difference?

Was wondering if a better quality guitar cable would noticeably improve the quality of my DIs.

There are differences between cables which can be as drastic just like the difference in sound between two different pickups.

It works for me. Do you mean the his dropbox link is dead? The ensuing conversation is still relavent and contains good info. Perhaps if Greg see's this he'll repost though.

I lost the files for the bigger shootout, but here are two clips with the only thing changed in the signal chain being the cable:

Lava: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1569935/LAVA CABLE.wav
Monster: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1569935/MONSTER CABLE.wav

Overall, the Lava has more detail on the very top, and a low end extension deeper than the monster.

While the Monster may seem to have "more clarity" to some, I feel like it's just an overabundance of high-midrange, and the limiting of bandwidth that makes the track pop out just a bit more; this to me in a mix, could get congested sounding, especially if layered.

compared a sommer cable to a monster. All my cables are monster so i have a lot. The other is my firends. Got pretty dissapointed (in mine) when i heard the sommer. so i bought some evidence cables and gonna compare them to the latter (which seems like a great cable) which Lasse advised me to check out by the way (so i was happy to find out my firend had one).
This will help me choose a good bulk cable for my rig. (or i could go mogami and keep the evidence or sommer for the connection between instrument and whatever comes first in the chain for ex)

Anyway im missing the point. Bottom line is i do think that cables do make a difference and i wasnt trying too hard to hear them when i tried monster vs sommer. Was pretty obvious.

A perfect scientific experiment would be:

DAW >> Short HI-Q Cable >> Reamp Box >> Tested Guitar Cable >> DI Box >> Short HI-Q Cable >> DAW

All tested cables of same length.

The signal would be a full 20hz-22khz frequency sine sweep at few different levels.

I don't know about A/B between expensive cables but there is a definite difference between quality made cables and shitty ones...

+1

As long as the cable is of good quality, the difference will be VERY small, or even nonexistent.

They are all made of mostly the same materials (with some exceptions ofc) and the only differences are in the way these materials are put together.

As long as you're not using cheap-arse cable you should be alright. There are a ton of different cable manufacturers, and some ridiculously boutique and expensive ones. At the end of the day, I don't think any of it is a 'make or break' difference, so long as you're using a quality cable of some type (even if it's not uber-elite). The differences are much more pronounced on high impedance signals (ie. passive pickups).
